Inleiding

Omschrijving

Introduction

A TOWNHOUSE incorporated into the street façade, built in 1887 in Eclectic style to a design by A. Salm GBzn. for H.W. Nijman. Salm designed for this entrepreneur on the Weesperzijde on a chamfered plot a row of five townhouses. In these houses he experimented with diverse stylistic forms. Around 1930 the interior was partially reconstructed in Art Deco style.

Description

A townhouse constructed on a chamfered rectangular plan in grey/red brickwork laid in cross bond, with a gently sloping, broken roof, and on the (rendered) rear elevation a narrow extension housing the staircase. The brickwork is enlivened by (artificial) stone decorative bands (speckled courses), closing and setting-out stones. The house, which is three window bays wide and asymmetrically arranged, comprises four storeys: basement, bel-étage and two upper storeys. In the right, narrow section is the entrance, framed by neo-renaissance pilasters with round arch, upon which rests a broken volute pediment. In the pediment is a round-arch window with cast-iron ornamental grille beneath a segmental arch with closing stone. On the upper storey glazed doors provide access to a rectangular French balcony with natural stone balustrade with a cartouche. Above the eighteen-pane fanlight is a segmental arch with ornamental brickwork in the tympanum. Below the balcony is a cartouche with the building year '1887'. On the uppermost storey is a cross window, beneath a straight string course. Above this is the heavy, profiled cornice. The wide left section has on the bel-étage a three-part arched, wooden frame with hardstone drip moulding with in the fanlights respectively two times six-pane and one time fifteen-pane glazing bars. The rectangular oriel has at the base cartouches with scrollwork and a decorated moulding above. The curved, broken pediment encompasses a semicircle. The fanlights have the same glazing bar pattern as the frame on the bel-étage. On the uppermost storey the cross window has a surround with pilaster wings and a curved broken pediment with a console as closing stone. The apex gable is divided into three sections, the base of which is formed by a basket arch with at the corners buttresses consisting of consoles, blocks, balls and obelisks. The second division has a round-arch attic window beneath a triangular pediment with scrollwork in the corner pieces and a decorative wrought-iron hoisting bracket. In the third division is a blind oculus placed between pilasters with volutes as corner pieces beneath a curved, broken pediment with a vase as crown. The rear elevation retains the original windows and stained glass in the extended staircase housing.

Of the original interior, in addition to the original layout, the following remain: cassette ceilings, panelled and glass and sliding doors including hinges and locks, built-in cupboards, tiled floor in the basement, marble corridor with matching staircase and wainscoting and brass stair rail, stained-glass inner windows, and the chimneypiece on the upper storey. Also from this period are part of the hearth on the second storey and a servants' cupboard in the attic. Above the rendered wainscoting of the corridors run stencilled bands.

Around 1930 the wooden wainscoting and the door surrounds were altered in a style appropriate to the new marble chimneypieces on the bel-étage and the upper storey. In this period the basement acquired new wainscoting. The toilets in the original staircase have partly original, partly Art Deco tiles and an original installation. Most doors and many other betimming components still show the first finish coat in the colours dark green, brown and ochre, sometimes with gilded piping painted over. In the bathroom with partly the fixtures from 1930, there is a light shaft of which the stained-glass section is partly preserved.

Valuation

The townhouse on the Weesperzijde from 1887 is of general importance for its cultural and architectural historical value as a well-preserved example of richly detailed—both in interior and exterior—neo-renaissance residences for the affluent class developed by private patrons, and also for its place in the oeuvre of architect A. Salm GBzn. The residence is of general urban-planning importance due to its ensemble value as an image-defining component of the late nineteenth-century riverfront on the east side of the Amstel.
