Inleiding
In de straatwand opgenomen HERENHUIS in 1887 in Eclectische trant naar een ontwerp van A. Salm GBzn. voor H.W. Nijman. Salm ontwierp voor deze ondernemer aan de Weesperzijde op een afgeschuind kavel een rij van vijf herenhuizen, waarbij hij experimenteerde met diverse stijlvormen.
Omschrijving
Op een afgeschuinde, rechthoekige plattegrond in grauw/rood bakstenen kruisverband opgetrokken herenhuis, de flauw hellende geknikte kap gedekt met leien in Rijndekking. Aan de (gepleisterde) achterzijde bevindt zich een smalle uitbouw van het trappenhuis. In het metselwerk zijn aanzet- en sluitstenen, alsmede blokken ter hoogte van de middendorpels opgenomen. Het drie vensterassen brede, a-symmetrisch ingedeelde woonhuis telt vier bouwlagen: souterrain, bel-etage en twee verdiepingen, en een kapverdieping. De ingang is in de linkertravee Het brede rechterdeel heeft op de bel-etage twee gekoppelde getoogde vensters met bakstenen muurdam en natuurstenen afzaat. Op de verdieping hierboven zijn de twee vensters samengevoegd tot één getoogd kruiskozijn met deuren naar een rechthoekig balkon. Het balkon rust op consoles en heeft een eenvoudig houten hekwerk en natuurstenen aanzetposten. De middenstijl en het kalf van het kruiskozijn zijn decoratief gesneden. De bovenste verdieping heeft twee rondboogvensters, gescheiden door een muurdam en een Frans balkon met eenvoudig smeedijzeren hekwerk. De twee dakkapellen hebben overkragende zadeldakjes. De kroonlijst rust op consoles. Het smalle linkerdeel heeft boven de diepe portiek een zwaar aangezette wimperg rustende op een gedrukte spitsboog en halfzuilen met knopkapitelen. De glasdeur heeft -ook in het halfronde bovenlicht- sierroosters. De wimperg heeft tussen de deelzuiltjes kleine vensters. Op de hoeken en in de top van de wimperg zijn neo-gotische ornamenten geplaatst. De tweezijdige erker rust op kwartholle, schuin geplaatste, consoles en heeft een ingesnoerde naaldspits met leien in Maasdekking. De gedrukte spitsboogvensters zijn gevat in eenvoudige houten kozijnen en hebben een verticale onderverdeling in drieën met vast kalf. De spits loopt door in het met siermetselwerk gevulde spaarveld van een driepasboog. Hierboven in de topgevel bevindt zich een rondboogvenster en een decoratief smeedijzeren hijsbalk. De hoekzuiltjes schragen de topgevel.
Waardering
Het herenhuis aan de Weesperzijde uit 1887 is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als gaaf voorbeeld van, door particuliere opdrachtgevers ontwikkelde, rijk gedetailleerde, eclectische woonhuizen voor de gegoede stand alsmede vanwege de plaats in het oeuvre van de architect A. Description
A townhouse constructed on a chamfered, rectangular plan in grey/red brickwork laid in cross bond, with a gently sloping broken roof covered with slate in Rhine pattern. On the (rendered) rear elevation is a narrow extension housing the staircase. The brickwork incorporates setting-out stones and closing stones, as well as blocks at the height of the mid-dorpels. The house, which is three window bays wide and asymmetrically arranged, comprises four storeys: basement, bel-étage and two upper storeys, and a roof storey. The entrance is in the left bay. The wide right section has on the bel-étage two coupled arched windows with brick wall pier and natural stone sill. On the storey above are the two windows combined into one arched cross window with doors to a rectangular balcony. The balcony rests on consoles and has simple wooden railings and natural stone setting-out posts. The central post and the calves of the cross window are decoratively carved. The uppermost storey has two round-arch windows, separated by a wall pier and a French balcony with simple wrought-iron railings. The two roof dormers have overhanging gabled roofs. The cornice rests on consoles. The narrow left section has above the deep porch a heavily moulded wimberg resting on a depressed pointed arch and half-columns with knob capitals. The glazed door has ornamental grilles—also in the semicircular fanlight. The wimberg has small windows between the part-columns. Neo-gothic ornaments are placed on the corners and in the apex of the wimberg. The two-sided oriel rests on quarter-hollow, obliquely placed consoles and has a constricted needle spire with slate in Maas pattern. The depressed pointed-arch windows are set in simple wooden frames and have vertical subdivision into three parts with fixed calves. The spire continues into the spare field of a three-lobed arch filled with ornamental brickwork. Above this in the apex gable is a round-arch window and a decorative wrought-iron hoisting bracket. The small corner columns support the apex gable.
Valuation
The townhouse on the Weesperzijde from 1887 is of general importance for its cultural and architectural historical value as a well-preserved example of richly detailed eclectic residences for the affluent class developed by private patrons, and also for its place in the oeuvre of architect A. Salm GBzn. The residence is of general urban-planning importance due to its ensemble value as an image-defining component of the late nineteenth-century riverfront on the east side of the Amstel.
