Inleiding

Description
Introduction
MANSION, built in 1886 in the style of Eclecticism with plastered decorations executed. The design, from 1885, is by J.H.T. Löning and was built on commission of Hibbelns glass factory. The mansion forms part of the nineteenth-century riverfront on the Amstel, Weesperzijde, developed at the end of the nineteenth century by private building contractors.
Description
Residential house built in English bond on a chamfered rectangular floor plan over four storeys (basement, piano nobile and two upper floors), three window bays wide, with a central dormer window in the roof slope. The window openings and the portico are all straight-headed. In the brickwork are incorporated plastered decorative bands (bed joints), springer and abutment stones. The base is in block bond, the main entablature above the fourth storey consists of a thin architrave, a frieze with floral motifs and a cornice with mutuli, four of which continue in triglyphs, regulae and guttae. Above the piano nobile and the upper floor are heavy profiled natural stone drip mouldings applied. The drip mouldings of the continuous threshold stones are less heavily executed. The portico, on the right of the elevation, has above the block bond a structure consisting of a cornice with mutuli, supported by two consoles with diamond heads and acanthus leaves. Acanthus leaves are also applied on the inside against the lintel. Above the moulding is a round window with a profiled semicircular moulding resting on a base with scrollwork. In the moulding a female head is incorporated as the keystone. In the portico the block bond of the basement continues and ashlar steps lead to two panel doors with decorative grilles, under fanlights, in a cross window. Above the two basement windows a diamond head is placed. The balconies on the first and second floors have opening doors. The balcony on the second floor has a wrought-iron railing. The dormer window in the central axis has a semicircular window with a diamond head as keystone and a triangular pediment supported by fluted pilasters with consoles, with hoist beam. In the frieze between the consoles is a cartouche.
The rear elevation is executed in a cream-coloured painted block bond and has a dormer window with three-sided pediment.
The original interior layout is partially intact, as are some panel doors.
Evaluation
The mansion on the Weesperzijde from the eighteen-eighties is of general importance for its cultural-historical and architectural value as an intact example of, developed by private commissioners, richly detailed residential houses for the well-to-do class. The residential house is of general urban planning importance as an image-supporting component of the late nineteenth-century riverfront on the east side of the Amstel.
