Inleiding

Introduction

Ensemble of four MANSIONS, built around 1880-1890 in the style of Eclecticism. The mansions form part of the eastern nineteenth-century riverfront on the Amstel, Weesperzijde, developed at the end of the nineteenth century by private building contractors. The adjoining houses are located at the corner of the building block at the intersection with Eerste Boerhaavestraat.

Description

Ensemble of four residential houses, each three window bays wide, built in English bond under (flattened) hipped roofs. The floor plan is a chamfered rectangle. The four residential houses together form a single architectural unit, but no axis of symmetry is present. Each residential house has four storeys: basement, piano nobile and two upper floors. The ornaments are executed in plasterwork. The windows and porticoes are all rounded.

The four houses have a rusticated base and a continuous cornice with frieze on the corners supported by colossal block pilasters, the blocks staggered per storey. The basement and pilasters are bush-hammered. The basement in block bond covers the basement and piano nobile, with each individual house having corner pilasters, provided with field panels with rosettes and bas-reliefs. The central four pilasters support a semicircular ornament. The plinth is executed in ashlar. The transition to the upper floor is marked by a profiled drip moulding. On the upper floors the central window bays are framed, with the first floor having a simple moulding and above the fanlight of the opening balcony doors a panel with rosette. The balcony rests on consoles ending in a triglyph with regula and guttae, hung with a festoon (the wrought-iron balcony railings at numbers 16-17 are convex). The moulding of the second floor has a Corinthian pilaster arrangement, with the corniced main entablature coinciding with that of the entire unit and the base of the pilaster ending in scrollwork. The two central houses have sash windows with plastered corner stones in the stretches on either side of the balconies. On the second floor the central window has opening windows below the fanlight. The flanking windows on the first floor have a panel with rosette at the bottom; on the second floor a band with acanthus leaves at the corners and a rosette in the middle. The asymmetrically placed porticoes have ashlar steps and threshold stones, two doors (number 16 has only one door) under fanlights and a flat ceiling. Number 18 has panel doors with decorative grilles and the original fluted central mullion with acanthus leaves. The sash windows of the piano nobile rest on ashlar threshold stones on consoles of acanthus leaves. The basement windows are simple casement windows. House number 19 has in the roof covered with recessed old hollow tiles a dormer window with curved pediment, fluted moulding, hoist beam and wooden claw pieces; numbers 18 and 17 are fitted with a triangular pediment (number 18 also with recessed old hollow tiles), while number 17 has a zinc covering on the flattened hipped roof and again a curved pediment above the dormer. All dormer windows have a hoist beam.

The side elevation has, like the front elevation, a pilaster arrangement and basement in bush-hammered block bond, a plinth and a main entablature with panel frieze. The central two window bays are set within a moulding, crowned by a double dormer with fluted side sections, under a triangular pediment. The placement of the windows, narrower and closer together on the left, is asymmetrical. The windows on the piano nobile, two in the centre and two on the right, have ashlar threshold stones as on the front. On the left are two doors under fanlights in shallow porticoes. The windows on the upper floors, on either side of the moulding, have the same detailing as the flanking windows on the front. The fifth window bay is entirely blind with diagonals in bas-relief in the plaster layer. The detailing of the windows within the moulding is on the first floor as that of the other windows on this floor. The moulding itself is simple and has, on the second floor with T-windows, a block bond. The cornice between the first and second floors has palmette acroteria. The spout gables at the rear are, insofar as not built in, plastered in block bond.

In the interior some rooms have stucco ceilings from the period of construction, particularly number 16, the upper two storeys and number 18 piano nobile.

Evaluation

The richly detailed ensemble of four mansions on the Weesperzijde from the eighteen-eighties is of general importance for its cultural-historical and architectural value as an intact example of, developed by private commissioners, richly detailed, eclectic residential houses, both as regards interior and exterior, for the well-to-do class. The residential houses are of general urban planning importance as an image-supporting component of the late nineteenth-century riverfront on the east side of the Amstel.
