The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 3: BOERDERIJ OP VOORBURCHT.

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- als enig overgebleven in zijn soort, een relatief gaaf bewaard voorbeeld van een hofstede op een omgracnte voorburcht van een Utrechtse omgrachte ridderhofstad;

- vanwege de architectuur van de woning en aangebouwde herenkamer;

- vanwege de historische ensemblewaarde.

Description component 3: FARMHOUSE ON THE FOREBURCHT.

This farmhouse is already mentioned in the 16th century and is inextricably linked with the Ridderhofstad. Red brick (cloister bricks) partly rendered farmhouse of the crux-house type, situated on the moated elevated foreburcht. The farmhouse was also rebuilt at the time of the construction of the main house in the 17th century. The south-facing front facade of the farmhouse dwelling shows the segmental arch stretches above the windows and entrance door, which were also present on the main house until c. 1801. The crux of the farmhouse is the master's chamber placed with its back to the dwelling above a vault cellar, whose side facade merges into the front facade of the dwelling. This master's chamber formed a separate building structure and had its own access on the west side. It is conceivable that this was the master's chamber for the lords of Oudegein. With the exception of this master's chamber, the farmhouse is covered with a broad reed-thatched gabled roof; the master's chamber has a tile gabled roof. The front facade of the dwelling shows a gable termination on the left side with two volutes. This gable ends in a single staircase. The termination on the right side is straight: it is plausible that the right gable termination mirrored that on the left side, but this is not certain. The farmhouse "De Hofstee" was restored in 1975 by architect Canneman, whereby the original function was changed into a dwelling; at the end of that century a second major internal and external restoration followed. Internally, the business section of the farmhouse adjoining the dwelling on the north side has an anchor beam structure. Rear (north) facade: red brick facade with sawtooth termination with in the middle the broad passage under arched stretch of the former double door. On either side a high-set arched iron stable window and at the gable ends a low passage under arched stretch with shutter. In the apex gable a shutter under arched stretch. On either side the farmhouse shows multi-ruite windows, single and composite, and some entrance doors. On the east facade a projection placed at right angles to the facade with a storey below under reed-thatched half-hipped roof. Front facade of the dwelling on the left side the entrance door with 6-pane fanlight. To the right of this two 20-pane sash windows and on the right side a smaller 12-pane sash window. On the upper storey a 16-pane cross window. In the adjoining right side facade of the master's chamber two 9-pane sash windows. In the short facade facing the main building some multi-pane windows and a shutter under segmental arch stretch towards the vault cellar.

Valuation

The farmhouse on the foreburcht is of general cultural-historical importance:

- on account of its age;

- as the only surviving example of its kind, a relatively well-preserved example of a farmstead on a moated foreburcht of a Utrecht moated knight's mansion;

- on account of the architecture of the dwelling and adjoining master's chamber;

- on account of the historical ensemble value.
