Omschrijving onderdeel 2:

Waardering

Description of component 2:

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT AT HUIS DE MOEREN. A historic garden, park and country estate layout in formal and landscape style from the 18th and 19th centuries, partly preserved in structure and partly in detail, consisting of a formal pattern of avenues, a sight line perpendicular to the house, cross-avenues and a filling of square-shaped meadows and a kitchen garden and a pattern of two park sections in landscape style from the early 19th century. In the 18th century the country estate was divided into De Moeren and Vredenoord. The house of the latter country estate was demolished in 1962, whereby the greater part of the terrain, including a park layout in landscape style, came into single ownership again and once more became part of De Moeren. Although both parks in landscape style were created separately from each other, this occurred within the framework of the characteristic formal avenue and plot pattern of the estate, which stands out very distinctly from the surrounding agricultural land. This is therefore the reason why the core of the estate, to the extent that it connects both parks in landscape style, and several square-shaped meadows on the south-east side, which together form the characteristic surroundings and framework of both ornamental parks, form part of the protected historic park layout. Both parks in landscape style were created in the early 19th century. The layout of the former country estate Huis Vredenoord (the park itself was called Lente-oord) consists of a layout bounded by a straight plot with timber boundaries (SE and NE side) and avenue (oaks, early 19th century) of winding paths with park and shrub woodland with a striking viewpoint mound in the centre on the NW side. With the exception of the built structures, the open space intersected by winding paths on the NW side of the latter mound forms part of the protected historic layout. The landscape-style park at Huis de Moeren was created around 1817-1819, when the owner G.G. van de Hoeven built the main building of the country estate Huis de Moeren. In July 1818 a considerable sum is paid to Jacobus de Bruijn, gardener, who apparently had a large part in the creation of this small-scale landscape-style park and who may be the designer of this park. The layout consists of a green open space behind the house with lawn, which is divided by an elegantly deeply incised pattern in lobe-shaped fields. Until recently, the paths were marked off from these fields with vertically placed brick edges (not present in 2001), which gave the park a sculptural quality. Groups of shrubs and solitary trees (oak and beech) close off the park to the outside to some extent. On the SW side this park section is closed off by an avenue (oaks in triangular arrangement, circa 1800). On the NW side of this park section the kitchen garden, which is closed off on the NW side by a characteristic wooden fence. Along the public road, at that time a narrow mound was thrown up along the entire NE edge over which runs a deeply incised pattern of winding paths, which ends in a circular beech planting (originally a berceau) at the NW corner of the country estate. This well-preserved winding layout, which forms an important Dutch example of an early landscape-style layout with winding paths, was planted with park trees (oak, beech) and shrubs. The straight public road planted with oaks (triangular arrangement, circa 1800) on this side, which runs immediately in front of the house, forms the formal cross-axis with respect to the long main and sight axis situated perpendicular to the front elevation; the latter axis is flanked on both sides by ditches and planted with double beech. The axis ends on a viewpoint mound, where a pavilion has long stood (the current pavilion was recently placed and is of secondary importance for the protection). Between this sight line and the house is an oval open space, closed to the outside by park trees and shrubs, which was laid out for croquet play. This croquet field lends the view from the house through the axis and vice versa an important perspective value. On the SE side the park is closed off at the rear of the house by the straight Moersebaan, planted with oaks (triangular arrangement, circa 1800 or older), which forms the central avenue of the estate. This avenue connects both parks in landscape style on this side and provides access to the straight plot of meadow on the other side, which is entirely surrounded by ditches and enclosed by two successively right-angled straight oak avenues (triangular arrangement, 1800 or older), which are separated from the meadows by a ditched timber boundary. The meadows are divided into two squares by a broad, also ditched timber boundary. This layout of the estate section of De Moeren is a characteristic example of historic country estate architecture, where the infrastructure of waterways and avenues and the partly open and enclosed spaces for grazing and coppice cultivation are expressed in a sober and functional architectural form that also has aesthetic value. The small-scale rectangular open spaces between the two landscape-style parks are laid out in the same manner, rectangular, surrounded by ditches, and partly separated from each other and enclosed by ditched timber boundaries. On the NW side, a straight path over a ditched timber boundary, which according to the Topographic and Military map of 1894 has long been present here, forms the connection between the two landscape-style parks.

Valuation

The historic garden and park layout of De Moeren is of general cultural-historical importance

- because of its intactness

- because of its age

- as an intact example of an early landscape-style layout in the Netherlands

- because of the unity in layout between country estate and estate

- because of its beauty.
