Inleiding

Introduction

Building block component with WORKERS' HOUSING designed in 1908 and 1910 by architect Jan Ernst van der Pek (1865-1919), commissioned by housing association "Rochdale". The dwellings are executed in the style of Transitional Architecture, in which Berlagian elements such as square towers and truncated corners are combined with neo-Renaissance motifs such as rustication bands. The complex is the first housing project in Amsterdam that came about thanks to the new Housing Act of 1901 and at the time featured innovative alcove-free floor plans. The dwellings were built in two phases: 28 dwellings completed in 1909 and a further 20 in 1912. N.B. The dwellings have been modified in parts.

Description

The four-storey apartment dwellings, constructed in brick in stretcher bond and situated in the Van Beuningenstraat and Fannius Scholtenstraat, together form an L-shaped floor plan. The housing complex has the hipped roofs, visible between the projecting bay sections, covered with smothered tuiles du Nord and with a gutter on corbels at the underside. The roof plane and roof cornice are interrupted by continuous building volumes, five in the Van Beuningenstraat and one in the Fannius Scholtenstraat. At the corner there is a chamfered variant. The facades are horizontally articulated by double yellow facing brick decorative mouldings that connect the drip moulds of the windows. The drip moulds on the third storey and alternating drip moulds are accentuated by double yellow facing brick setting blocks. The windows are closed off by a roll course above which, positioned higher, a half-brick segmental arch prevents leakage. In the facade field a diamond formed by two yellow facing bricks is laid in. On the ground floor the travertine window is closed off by a roll course. At the location of the floor levels staff anchors are present. Van Beuningenstraat 97 still has the original window arrangement: T-sash windows with divided fanlight. The facade at the Van Beuningenstraat (66 metres) is characterised by five bays ending in a flat-roofed structure and in four cases built out above the entrance section. The built-out volumes contain two pairs of doors under an overhang with spout gable, supported by three stepped, sandstone consoles. Per storey two sash windows follow, with in the roof structure pivoting windows under two hoisting beams. On either side of the higher built-up volumes come two window axes with sash windows. Only in the bay adjoining the corner building is this scheme deviated from with three window axes and one separate one. In these cases a flat-roofed roof gable with pivoting window is present in the hipped roofs. The bay in the Fannius Scholtenstraat has on either side three window axes and also here at the corner one separate one. A second interruption of the scheme forms the second cornice-breaking section, viewed from the corner in the Van Beuningenstraat, which alone remains within the facade wall. Here is located a facade stone 'HERE BEGAN / ROCHDALE / ANNO 1908'. The five-storey corner building has on either side a sash window with fanlight and above a pivoting window. On the ground floor the corner is rounded and provided with sandstone blocks with a console above which over three storeys the corner is chamfered and in which three narrow windows with fanlight are placed one above the other. At the location of the fourth floor level a sandstone console is situated. In the top storey a narrower chamfer on natural stone console.

Valuation

First housing complex of Rochdale of general importance because of its social-historical, architectural-historical and typological value as an architecturally pioneering project in social housing, because of its eminent position in the history of workers' housing and because of its place in the oeuvre of architect J. E. van der Pek.
