Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE AANLEG.
Het kasteelterrein wordt omsloten door een ellipsvormige buitengracht uit het begin van de 17de eeuw. Daarbinnen het kasteeleiland met centraal daarop het kasteel en omgeven door een cirkelvormige gracht. De begroeiing op het eiland kent geen aanleg meer en is verwilderd. Tussen de beide grachten is aan de oostzijde het terrein van de voorburcht, waarop een U-vormige bebouwing. De binnenoevers van de buitengracht zijn goeddeels als tuin in gebruik. De dubbele omgrachting dateert uit het eerste kwart van de vijftiende eeuw.
De aanleg van het omringende terrein wordt gekenmerkt door een lanenstructuur, waterlopen, bospercelen met het dubbel omgrachte kasteelterrein als middelpunt. In het begin van de negentiende eeuw was er sprake van een "buytenhof", waarvan gedeelten in gebruik waren gegeven aan de pachters van de voorburcht, doch thans is daar weinig meer van terug te vinden. De onder een hoek van circa dertig graden op de poorttoren van de voorburcht aanlopende, door dubbele bomenrijen omgeven, oprijlaan, die een bruggetje over een aftakking van de Voordeldonkse Broekloop bevat, is ca 300 meter lang en vormt uit historisch oogpunt het meest in het oog springende onderdeel van het lanenstelsel. Bij de aansluiting op de weg Asten-Heusden bevinden zich twee driehoekige terreintjes, die vermoedelijk restanten bevatten van een toegangspartij. Ten zuiden van het kasteelterrein is een door waterlopen omgeven rechthoekig bosperceel dat in de negentiende eeuw heeft dienst gedaan als slingerbos, maar thans is verwilderd.
Een wisselend aantal pachtboerderijen maakte in de loop der tijd deel uit van de heerlijkheid Asten. Geen van deze hoeven is echter bewaard gebleven. Een sluisje in het zuidoosten geeft via andere waterlopen de verbinding met de Voordeldonkse Broekloop.
Waardering
De HISTORISCHE AANLEG is van algemeen belang:
- vanwege de nog goed herkenbare historische structuur van een op een agrarische functie gebaseerde heerlijkheid;

Description component 2: HISTORICAL LAYOUT.
The castle grounds are enclosed by an elliptical outer moat from the early 17th century. Within this is the castle island with the castle at its centre, surrounded by a circular moat. The vegetation on the island has no formal layout and has become wild. Between the two moats, on the east side, lies the forecourt area, on which there is a U-shaped building. The inner banks of the outer moat are largely used as gardens. The double moat dates from the first quarter of the fifteenth century.
The layout of the surrounding area is characterized by an avenue system, watercourses, wooded parcels with the doubly-moated castle grounds as centre point. In the early nineteenth century there was mention of a "buytenhof", of which parts had been leased to the tenants of the forecourt, but little of this remains today. The drive, lined with double rows of trees and running at an angle of approximately thirty degrees towards the gatehouse tower of the forecourt, which contains a small bridge over a branch of the Voordeldonkse Broekloop, is approximately 300 metres long and forms, from a historical perspective, the most striking component of the avenue system. At the junction with the Asten-Heusden road are two triangular plots that presumably contain remains of an entrance arrangement. South of the castle grounds is a rectangular wooded parcel surrounded by watercourses which in the nineteenth century served as a swingwood but is now overgrown.
A varying number of tenant farms formed part of the lordship of Asten over time. However, none of these homesteads has been preserved. A small sluice in the southeast provides, via other watercourses, the connection with the Voordeldonkse Broekloop.
