The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 1: KASTEEL.

- de typologie van een uit een versterkt huis ontstaan woonkasteel, met nog steeds herinneringen aan de oorspronkelijke defensieve functie;

- de gecompliceerde bouwhistorie met de aan verschillende tijden en stijlen herinnerende bouwdelen en -materialen;

- de architectuur-, kunst- en bouwhistorische waarde van in- en exterieur;

Description of component 1: CASTLE.

The oldest mention of the castle dates from 1326. The property was a fief of the Duke of Gelderland. From that time would date the base of the gatehouse tower (on the northwest side), which was heightened in marl in the 15th century. Furthermore, on the southeast side of the complex there was a keep. In 1578 the castle was destroyed by fire. Repairs took place under Sybert van Eyll from 1598 onwards. On one of the gables facing the courtyard are date anchors 1618. The keep was not rebuilt, the entrance through the gatehouse was blocked; access was moved to the south wing, thereby creating a direct relationship with the farm buildings on that side. On the north side a wing called the Nederhuis was built. The kitchens were housed here.

Only from the 18th century onwards is there again mention of building activity. Owner Johan Baptist Joseph de Bierens had a section added on the east side to the existing 'Nederhuis', completing the still-existing arrangement of four wings around a courtyard. During the 19th century the courtyard was provided with extensions. These were undone during restoration in the nineteen-seventies. Then the bridge and access through the gatehouse were also restored.

The castle consists of three wings around a modest courtyard with the gatehouse on the northwest side. The building is partially cellared and has two storeys of varying height and garret storeys. The tower on the northwest side has three storeys. The building is provided with gabled and hipped roofs covered with slate, roof dormers and roof tiles. It is built in brick with the application of marl on the upper part of the tower.

Interior. Only the rooms below the gatehouse tower and below the salons on the south side are cellared. The two cellars below the residential section are covered with barrel vaults and connected to each other by a sloping passage.

Tower with wall stairs with belt arches in the thickness of the wall. On the tower storey a room with a fireplace and two candle niches; on the second storey two window seats.

Corner room on the east side with a compound beam structure. For the sake of a stucco ceiling that has since been removed, the keystones and the collar beam are cut flush. Natural stone early 19th-century fireplace with volutes on lion's paws. Adjacent to this a salon on the northeast side with a late 18th-century stucco ceiling, decorated with lozenges with profile mouldings and pearl edging. Central section with acanthus leaves in high relief, to the sides finely detailed floral motifs, tondos and garlands of laurel leaf ending in bird heads. Fireplace against the short side. In the kitchen a large fireplace with baking oven and drying cupboards above.

On the storey a room (subdivided during restoration) with a compound beam structure provided with stucco finishing with curves between the secondary beams and a small profile moulding at the base.

The oak roof truss structure with curved braces dates from around 1600 and the years thereafter.

Valuation

The CASTLE d' Erp, belonging to the historic country estate d' Erp, is of general architectural and cultural-historical importance because of:

- the typology of a residential castle developed from a fortified house, still bearing reminders of the original defensive function;

- the complicated building history with building elements and materials recalling different periods and styles;

- the architectural, artistic and building-historical value of interior and exterior;

- the central position in the layout, where the castle historically, functionally and visually forms the centre.
