Omschrijving

PARKAANLEG, bestaande uit

a. landschapspark

b. tuinen

c. bosgebied

d. boomgaard

e. weilanden

Description

PARK LAYOUT, consisting of

a. landscape park

b. gardens

c. wooded area

d. orchard

e. meadows

ad a.: The landscape park occupies the most westerly part of the complex. It is possible that H. Copijn was involved in the layout at Frymerson. It is known that he worked for Cuypers in Roermond. The design makes skilful use of the natural situation of the country estate between the Roer on the north side and the gently rising wooded slopes in the south. The layout, given the age of many solitary trees, can be dated around 1900. Between the house and the old tower lies a large forecourt in grass with a circulating path, of which the north-western segment, approximately one third, has disappeared. The moated tower was restored by Cuypers and was later incorporated as a decorative element in the design of the park layout. Towards St. Odiliënberg and the Roer, a landscape layout extends in a westerly direction with expansive views, accompanied by rows of trees. Along the south side of the layout runs an old access drive with avenue planting towards an imposing Gothic Revival entrance gate. On the north-west side there was also an entrance gate with pillars until the end of the 20th century. These pillars have, however, been destroyed, after which the gate was stored. East of the nineteenth-century forecourt lies a "square" of old sweet chestnuts, possibly from the eighteenth century. This square forms the transition to the wooded area and the short access drive from Paarloweg leads onto it. Also noteworthy is the large group of acacias in this part of the layout.

ad b.: There are two former vegetable gardens still recognizable as such in the terrain. The small vegetable garden lies behind the large barn of the farmhouse (east side), next to the access drive, and is bordered on the south side by Paarloweg. This garden has a triangular layout, of which the sides along the access drive and the road are planted with a hornbeam hedge. Against the barn wall are buttresses, which form the remnant of an old wall-trained fruit area. The other, larger, vegetable garden terrain lies to the north-east of the chestnut square mentioned under a. It is now a grassy waste ground with a few poplars, but a ditch that encloses the entire terrain still recalls the original function. This ditch, interrupted by a dam (see under 7), is connected to the moat around the tower (see under 4).

ad c.: The wooded area lies in the eastern part of the complex and consists of the higher old promenade wood along Paarloweg and the lower, wet part, which runs towards the north-east and ends at a long pond, an old arm of the Roer. In the wood, presumably in the 19th century, a circulating loop-shaped path was laid out, which begins and ends at the old sweet chestnuts mentioned under a. There are among others oaks, beeches, lindens, acacias and conifers.

ad d.: The substantial orchard has been situated from time immemorial between the lower-lying wood (separated from it by a ditch) and the large vegetable garden terrain. There is standard-stem fruit, among others apple, pear and cherry.

ad e.: The meadow area is situated along the river to the north and north-west of the house. It is connected to the landscape park by means of sight lines and views towards the Roer.

Valuation

GARDEN and PARK LAYOUT of general importance

- because of the age

- because of the moated tower, which is incorporated as a decorative element in the park layout and of which the origin possibly dates back to the first fortified house on the site

- because of the quality of the design of the landscape park layout, in which older elements and structures are integrated in a harmonious manner

- because of the well-preserved promenade wood

- because of the presence of clearly recognizable utility areas (orchard, vegetable gardens)

- because of the distinctive and well-preserved entrance gate from the second half of the nineteenth century

- because of the functional-spatial relationship with the other components of the country estate

- because of the landmark, landscape and cultural-historical value of the estate for the surroundings of St. Odiliënberg.
