HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The historic garden and park layout of Kasteel Wijlre consists of: a. approach drive b. terrain between both moats c. woodland walk d. meadows. Re a. the approach drive, which is used only sporadically, begins at a sharp angle to the road from Wijlre to Gulpen and ends at the entrance gate on the Kasteel Wijlreweg; the route is several hundred years old (18th century). On both sides of the gravel/rubble surface run low hawthorn hedges, with a tree-lined avenue of Italian poplar. Re b. the terrain between the moats (17th century or older) has always served a utilitarian function as an orchard, possibly combined with a simple ornamental garden on either side of the bridge; behind the outbuildings (the eastern part) always lay the vegetable garden and orchard; part of the current path pattern is based on old routes which divide the area into nine similar compartments. Although the layout of an orchard is now no longer present, the associated spatial characteristic of relative openness of this part of the historic layout situated between the moats has been preserved. The western part of the terrain consists of a large lawn with some old, but especially many young specimen trees, among which relatively many conifers; in the 19th century this part was already landscaped in a simple manner. The new garden layout in place of the old vegetable garden and on either side of the drive and bridge falls outside protection due to insufficient age, that is in the sense of the Monuments Act 1988, although the relative open character is accorded garden-historical value. The layout of the double moat structure with the castle and outbuildings at the hierarchical centre and the approach drive perpendicular to it form the design nucleus of the historic country estate Kasteel Wijlre. Re c. the woodland walk, formerly perhaps a coppice wood with standards, is the westernmost complex part, is accessible via two small bridges over the outer moat; one of the bridges lies on the axis of the castle; in the woods the former swimming pool and some old specimen trees. Around the year 2000 the woodland walk was provided with a layout which shows similarity with the branching of a tree; due to insufficient age, that is in the sense of the Monuments Act 1988, no monumental value can be accorded to this pattern. Re d. since they lie on either side of the approach drive, the meadows likewise fall within the complex; they lie south of the Kasteel Wijlreweg and are partly bordered with low hawthorn hedges; visually and in landscape terms they are of great importance while the watercourses present are likewise of importance, particularly for the maintenance of the moats. In the meadows stands a casemate (brick and concrete).

- the age;

- the virtually undisturbed old structure of the park layout;

- the historical layering of this structure, with layers from the 17th century or older, 18th and 19th centuries;

- the presence of a casemate.
