Inleiding
In 1940 door de Duitse bezetter gebouwde kompascompenseerschijf en nog datzelfde jaar in gebruik genomen. De schijf maakt deel uit van de vliegbasis Gilze-Rijen.
Omschrijving
De KOMPASCOMPENSEERSCHIJF op cirkelvormige grondslag bestaande uit een gemetselde bakstenen put van ca. 3 m diep en met een diameter van ca. 15 m waarvan de bovenzijde gelijk loopt aan het maaiveld. De put is aan de binnenzijde met cement afgesmeerd. In de put is een houten platform aangebracht dat 360 graden kon draaien en dat diende voor de herijking van de vliegtuigkompassen. Naast hout zijn voor het platform daarom niet-magnetische materialen toegepast voor onder meer de metalen raderen van het draaimechanisme. Het draaimechanisme kon zowel mechanisch als handmatig worden bediend. Onderin de put bevindt zich de machinekamer. Verder bevindt zich op de schijf een schuin-oplopende slede en enkele meetinstrumenten met rondom gradenverdeling.
Waardering
De in 1940 als uitbreiding van het vliegterrein Gilze-Rijen opgerichte KOMPASCOMPENSEERSCHIJF is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als getuigenis van militair erfgoed met name uit de periode van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het heeft kunsthistorische waarde vanwege de bijzondere technische constructie die nodig was voor de herijking van de kompassen. Typologisch is het object bijzonder zeldzaam. De compenseerschijf is gaaf bewaard gebleven.

The COMPASS COMPENSATION DISC on a circular foundation consisting of a masonry brick shaft of approximately 3 m deep and with a diameter of approximately 15 m, the top of which is level with the ground surface. The shaft is sealed on the inside with cement. A wooden platform has been installed in the shaft that could rotate 360 degrees and served for the recalibration of aircraft compasses.
