Omschrijving

- vanwege de gracht rond het kasteel, waarvan de noordoostelijke tak eindigt in een siergrot;

- vanwege de integratie van bestaande lanen- en waterlopenstelsels in de landschappelijke aanleg;

- vanwege de lange, formele zichtlaan vanaf het kasteel in zuidelijke richting;

- vanwege de aanwezigheid van monumentale boomgroepen en solitairen uit de 17de, 18de en 19de eeuw;

- vanwege de functioneel-ruimtelijke samenhang met de andere onderdelen van de buitenplaats;

Description

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT. The historic park layout surrounding Vorden Castle forms part of the characteristic Achterhoek farmstead or field-pattern landscape, which is characterised by arable and pasture lands edged with trees or hedges, sometimes elevated, in which scattered farmsteads provide a rustic accent. The landscape character of the layout around Huis Vorden is determined to a large extent by these characteristic agricultural lands and associated farmsteads, which are interspersed with deciduous woodland, meandering watercourses and tree rows. Together these elements form a particularly fine and varied landscape, which presents itself differently from the various walking paths, tree rows and lanes. Fine vistas to the castle in the northern part of the layout and the various farmsteads are also projected from the park. As such, Vorden's park is a good example of a 19th-century landscape park, in which the rural beauty of the surroundings was the guiding principle for the design and was optimally utilised in it. The park still contains numerous old trees, including a lime tree three to four hundred years old, beneath which Louis XIV is said to have rested according to tradition.

Running through this landscape layout from the castle to the southern boundary of the estate is a long formal vista lane. The lane crosses two watercourses that have long divided the park from east to west, the Vordense Beek and the Hissink Beek (later reworked and since then called Veengoot). At the level of the Vordense Beek, the vista lane crosses a brick round-arch bridge from 1727. Until the beginning of the 20th century, the lane continued past the bridge through a large vegetable garden adjoining an orchard.

The formal moat around the house was provided with a landscape-style meander in a north-easterly direction at the end of the 19th century; this terminated in the form of an ornamental grotto (1874), bordered with erratic stones.

East of the main building, in the Vordense Beek near Schuttestraat, there are still remains of an old water mill. These consist of two retaining walls on either side of the stream, constructed of red brick. The retaining walls were repaired in 1999 to the extent that total decay was prevented. The mill sluice threshold is also still present. Simultaneously, the mill pool and the southern stream course were restored in 1998/'99.

Valuation

The HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT belonging to the country estate Huis Vorden is of general importance:

- because of the moat around the castle, of which the north-eastern section terminates in an ornamental grotto;

- because of the integration of existing lane and watercourse systems in the landscape layout;

- because of the long, formal vista lane from the castle in a southerly direction;

- because of the presence of monumental tree groups and specimens from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries;

- because of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate;

- because of the distinctive, landscape and cultural-historical value of the estate for the area around Vorden.
