Omschrijving onderdeel 1: (Numanwei 7, Oudemirdum) HOOFDGEBOUW VAN HET COMPLEX RINIASTATE LANDHUIS RINIASTATE.

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de schoonheid;

- vanwege de gaafheid;

- als relatief zeldzaam bewaard gebleven voorbeeld van een ontwerp voor een landhuis van de bekende Friese architect Thomas Romein;

- vanwege de centrale ligging in de historische parkaanleg en de ornamentele waarde die het hierin vertegenwoordigt;

Description of component 1: (Numanwei 7, Oudemirdum) MAIN BUILDING OF THE RINIASTATE COUNTRY HOUSE COMPLEX RINIASTATE.

Whitewashed main building in neo-classical style, designed in 1843 by the Leeuwarden architect Thomas Romein and built in the same year for the owner, the widow Drieling. The house is one of the few surviving designs for country houses by Thomas Romein (1811-1881); the design is preserved in the Fries Museum. The house is situated on the top of a gentle slope and thereby occupies a dominant position in the historic park layout. The house was conceived at the same time as the historic park layout and forms a unity with it. The house is placed on a narrow plinth and consists of a raised narrow block-shaped central section under a gentle gabled roof (two square chimneys with caps against the ridge ends; a bell, operable from the kitchen, centrally on the roof) with two broader block-shaped side sections under flattened hipped roofs; the roofs are covered with Frisian glazed corrugated tiles. The central section has a tympanum crowning (with semi-circular window with spoke glazing bars on the front and rear sides) the underside of which forms the cornice of the upper storey facade of the central section, which is terminated on the sides by Doric pilasters. The cornice (with dentil moulding) runs along the two sides of the central section and also forms here the gutter of the gabled roof. Both the front and side facades of the central sections are also terminated by a cornice with dentil moulding in which the gutters are also incorporated. At the height of the central section, this cornice forms the termination of the three-sided projecting facade section at that location (garden room). The cornice is here the lower part of the balcony balustrade on the upper storey of the central section. A refined detail is the execution of the frieze of the main entablature on which the tympanum of the central section rests at the front. This frieze curves downwards in an arch slightly outward. Optically this gives the impression that the facade of the upper storey of the central section curves slightly inward in an arch. This lends the house on this side not only an additional perspective value; it also creates a spatial relationship with the surrounding park. The finish of the frieze is a response to the sloping profile of the slope on which the centre stands and to the two arch-shaped curving wooded backdrops of the park beside the house. In the raised side facades of the central section a round stained-glass window with Star of David in red and yellow, as an expression of the Jewish origin of the patron of the house. On the ground floor in the three-sided projecting central section three semi-circular windows extending to the ground with tree of life (palmette and volutes) in the semi-circular fanlights. In the semi-circular fanlights of the windows of the side sections (front and side facades) an identical tree of life motif. The central window of the projection is executed as a double terrace door with ornamental column-shaped door pin. These three windows in the projection show panel fields with central discus motif on the underside. The windows of the central section and the side sections are provided on the front and sides with semi-circular shutters. Upper storey of central section: centrally a double six-pane glazed balcony door (ornamental door pin) with shutters with on either side a single tall three-pane window with single shutter. Front side of central sections an opening six-pane window centrally located in a slightly recessed outlined facade field. In the roof of the central sections both on the front and side facades centrally a built-in roof dormer with opening four-pane windows (these roof dormers were partly added later). Right side facade: centrally a tall slender entrance door with panel fields and semi-circular fanlight, preceded by a flight of steps of two treads, with on either side a window as on the front sides of the central sections. Left side facade is identical to the right side facade; centrally however a double terrace door as on the front of the central section. Rear facade: the central section shows on the ground floor and on the upper storey three six-pane sash windows. On the second storey three opening four-pane windows. The rear facade of the left central section consists of two bays with on the left a four-pane opening window and on the right a door section as on the right side facade, but with a straight canopy. Below door and window a cellar window partly below ground level, behind burglar bars, preceded by a sloping grid work, set in a hard stone surround. In the roof two semi-circular stained-glass windows. In the rear facade of the right side section on the ground floor and on the upper storey two window recesses. On the right side a pump with iron handle. Interior: the house largely retains its original layout from the construction period. On the front side the house has two and on the rear side three storeys. The ground floor windows still all have interior shutters with panel fields. In the soffits of the round-arched windows fan-shaped ornamental pieces. In the hall and passage adjoining the main entrance on the right side facade richly decorated Italian ornamental tiles as floor tiles. Originally the doors were wood-coloured. During the restoration of the house in the 1990s the current colour scheme was applied. Centrally at the rear of the house the stairwell with simple flight of steps. In the garden room a 19th-century fireplace; in the dining room, which runs the length of the left facade, also a 19th-century fireplace with wooden ornamental chimney breast with mirror. In the kitchen partly original tiling with whitewares and a pump with copper handle. On the upper storey in the room centrally at the front a fireplace mantel with floret motifs in stucco.

Assessment

The main building of the Riniastate country house complex Riniastate is of general importance from a cultural-historical perspective:

- because of its age;

- because of its beauty;

- because of its integrity;

- as a relatively rare surviving example of a design for a country house by the renowned Frisian architect Thomas Romein;

- because of its central location in the historic park layout and the ornamental value it represents within it;

- because of the relationship with the park layout expressed in the architecture of the house (frieze of central section).
