Inleiding.

Introduction.

The Vincentius and Maria wing of the BOARDING SCHOOL Saint-Louis was originally built in 1843 as an elongated Neo-Classical wing with classrooms on the ground floor and bedrooms on the mezzanine storey. At the end of the 19th century the wing was extended (Maria wing) and the whole was expanded. After 1905 the building was altered whereby the cornice, capitals and mezzanine gave way to a second row of windows. The building was again rebuilt inside and out around 1960, whereby the second storey on the side of the courtyard was largely replaced by a flat roof with balustrade.

The wing was after 1905 connected by means of a passage consisting of three arches and an underpass to the already previously protected Neo-Baroque chapel.

Description.

Elongated, one- and two-storey boarding school building, built of brick, partially provided with a flat roof, partially covered with gabled and hipped roofs, covered with old Dutch tiles. The elongated facade on the side of the courtyard dates largely from 1843 and consists of a two-storey section with adjoining the around 1960 lowered one-storey section, which in total comprises 20 bays. The facade is entirely plastered and whitewashed and contains the marble foundation stone with the text 'Vincentius 1843'. The two-storey section has corner pilasters and cornices and below arched eight-pane and above arched six-pane windows with surround and hood. Here ventilation grilles in the form of cast-iron ornamental rosettes. In the short facade below two eight-pane windows and above a wide, three-part window flanked by two blind niches, framed within a rising band. The elongated courtyard facade retains from the situation before 1905 the basements and pilasters. It has arched eight-pane windows with stucco surround and hood, two entrances and is concluded by a balustrade. It bears the inscription: 'Castitas ni/ floreat/ Institutum pereat'. The connection with the chapel is formed by a brick corridor with underpass and gallery with three arch openings. Parallel to this wing lies a flat-covered two-storey wing with brick walls, arched eight- and six-pane windows and at the short facade a small gabled roof with neo-Gothic dormer windows. A stained-glass window commemorates the Marian Year 1954.

Beside the chapel is a courtyard enclosed by the aforementioned gallery and by a brick wall with segmental arch openings and glazing. The east side of this courtyard is formed by the Maria wing, which was built onto the Vincentius wing at the end of the nineteenth century and comprises two storeys. It is built of machine-made brick and covered by a hipped roof with neo-Gothic dormer windows. This wing has on the courtyard side a nine-bay facade with cornices and dentil course under the gutter and an extension with entirely altered facade. In the middle a narrow former entrance risalit with stepped gable, the text 'Sancta Maria' and a niche with Maria statue.

Both wings have been rebuilt internally. The cellar still partially retains the old crosswise-directed barrel vaults and brick trough vaults on iron profiles. At the courtyard an old lime tree avenue.

Valuation.

The building is of general importance.
