The register's description

Inleiding

- de voor kloosters typerende aanleg bestaande uit componenten voor devotie (beeld, calvarie), economie (moestuin met kas en koude bak) en recreatie (wandeling tussen bosschages en vijver, verhoging ten behoeve van (verdwenen) prieel);

- de ommuring van het geheel;

- de landschappelijke aanleg, slingerend vijver- en padenbeloop en een afwisseling van relatief gewone bomen met bijzondere exemplaren (cypres, ceder, bruine beuk);

- de functionele, visuele en historische samenhang met het klooster en met de Molenbeek;

Introduction

The garden behind the Redemptorist monastery has been laid out since the foundation of the monastery in 1868 and consists of utilitarian, devotional and recreational components.

Description

The garden consists of a broadly L-shaped, largely walled terrain behind the monastery. The walls are built in brick and provided with buttresses and saddle backs. At the level of the Molenbeek, which forms the southern boundary of the terrain, the wall is partially incomplete.

Behind the monastery there is a relatively open section with (in the courtyard) a statue of Mary and further back, on the lawn, a calvary against a background of trees. Directly behind the church is the former kitchen garden with a brick cold frame and a greenhouse.

The most important part of the garden is formed by the eastern zone which consists of wooded areas with, among others, copper beeches (north-eastern corner) and chestnuts (south-eastern corner) through which a winding path runs. Roughly in the centre is a winding pond with, among others, willow, cypress and cedar. Nearby is a raised area on which a summer house once stood for the recreation of the monastery inhabitants.

Valuation

The garden of the Redemptorist monastery is of general interest because of:

- the layout typical of monasteries consisting of components for devotion (statue, calvary), economy (kitchen garden with greenhouse and cold frame) and recreation (walking between wooded areas and pond, raised area for the benefit of (disappeared) summer house);

- the walling of the whole;

- the landscape design, winding pond and path courses and an alternation of relatively common trees with special specimens (cypress, cedar, copper beech);

- the functional, visual and historical coherence with the monastery and with the Molenbeek;

- the rarity of monastery gardens where all components are still present.
