Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
R.C. CHURCH Onze Lieve Vrouw van Altijddurende Bijstand, designed in 1874 by Th. Asseler in a Neo-Romanesque style for the Redemptorist fathers. The church was remodelled between 1907 and 1909 by A. de Bruin, under the supervision of P.J.H. Cuypers. During this remodelling the church was extended by three and a half bays and provided with a crossing tower, the ambulatory disappeared. Between 1963 and 1968 the church was restored under the direction of J. Hurks.
The adjoining Redemptorist monastery falls outside the protection.
Description.
Long basilical cruciform church, ten bays long with double-tower front and semicircular apse, executed in handmade brick under a complex gabled and hipped roof covered with artificial slate. Octagonal dome with spire. The front with stepped gable is decorated with pilaster strips and a climbing round-arched frieze. Below it a large rose window. On the ground floor the entrance is placed in a stepped round-arched portal with worked natural stone arches on columns with chequered capitals. The double door is framed by columns and an arch field. This arch field contains a relief with scrolls and shield with inscription: "BEATA MARIA /VIRGINI/DE PERPETUO/SUCCURSU". The portal is crowned by a stepped gable on natural stone leaf consoles and is finished with a natural stone moulding and cross. Above it a gallery of round arches in alternating coloured brick on columns, recessed fields with narrow stained-glass windows and natural stone sills between them. On either side square towers, each four storeys, crowned by a spire. The storeys are separated from each other by natural stone stringcourses. The lower two storeys have small windows, above them blind niches and a round-arched frieze are arranged. The top storey is octagonal and has sound holes on each side, separated from each other by small columns, above each opening a stepped gable. The right side elevation of the church borders the monastery. The left side elevation has a semicircular chapel just before the transept, behind the transept consisting of one bay is a rectangular building mass under hipped roof. Central and side aisles are at the top as well as the adjoining buildings provided with a round-arched frieze with coloured brickwork. Coloured bricks are also used in the relieving arches above the triplets. The gable ends of the transepts have a stepped gable under gabled roof, the large round-arched windows are filled with stained glass. The choir section has a semicircular apse, to the left and right of it apses, articulated by pilaster strips, with tall narrow stained-glass windows and a round-arched frieze. The crossing has a large octagonal tambour with round windows. In the interior the central and side aisles are spanned by plastered cross-rib vaults. The transverse arches rest on natural stone columns with chequered capitals. The wall has a three-part elevation with arches, false triforium and clerestory with triplets filled with stained glass, per bay separated by pilasters. The inventory includes among other things several altars: The high altar by Camille Esser of Weert (1910), three side altars by Peeters workshop from Antwerp from 1909, all in neo-Romanesque design, four 18th-century oak Baroque sculptures: Joseph, Augustine, Norbert and Dominic, from the former hidden church.
Valuation.
The church is of general importance. The building is of cultural-historical value as an expression of a spiritual development and as a specimen of the typological development of the three-aisled cruciform church. It has architectural-historical value given the place the design occupies in the oeuvre of architects Asseler and Cuypers. It is important because of the relatively rare neo-Romanesque formal language, which is expressed in the composition of the double-tower facade, the crossing dome and the carefully executed ornamentation and material use. The object has been well preserved.
