Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Rectangular LOCOMOTIVE SHED with WORKSHOP on L-shaped floor plan from 1907, designed by ir. G.W. van Heukelom. In 1931 some modifications were realised such as an extension of the office and staff space. The roof vents were removed from the truss structure in 1957 due to the discontinuation of steam traction. In 1979 the workshop was closed after which the shed was used for various other purposes until 1994.
Description.
Large shed (60 x 35 metres, 16 metres high) on a rectangular floor plan with business premises (85 x 25 metres) built against the south facade. The building consists of a hall with a stepped roof placed on the truss members and sloping in two steps. The building is entirely constructed from a steel lattice structure, filled with brick in Waal format (on the ground floor) and glass. The western facade has six wooden hinged doors, in line with the tracks running into the shed. The northern facade has seven bays and twelve window axes and has rectangular windows on the ground floor, above them round-arched windows. All windows with metal frames. The east facade has two doors and in the remaining four bays round-arched windows. The gable ends consist of large window arrangements in metal frames that fill the entire lattice work. The carriage repair workshop on the south side of the shed covering the width of two tracks is two storeys high, executed in lattice work with brick under a flat roof. In the brick walls twelve window axes are identifiable. Each bay here has two coupled standing windows above a parapet. On the upper floor a divided thermal window with iron subdivision. Roof structure covered with asphalt cladding on wooden subfloor. Four triangular glass roof lights. The single-storey flat-roofed extension is built between the repair workshop and the locomotive shed and has brick facades with wooden windows with small glazing bars in the fanlights on the ground floor. On the upper floor a steel lattice structure with glass sections. Two tall chimneys are built here. Internally the shed has a covering on seven double steel lattice trusses, each 10 metres apart and connected by main beams in lattice structure, coupled at the halfway point by secondary trusses. The main trusses of cast iron stand on a masonry foundation and are erected from the floor. The narrower roof trusses (20 metres) are laid on heavy buttresses. Above the entrance doors there is an iron gallery with balustrade on the inside. The floor is covered with concrete paving tiles and has a brick surround, on either side of the rails. Between the rails the floor is recessed to form a sump or maintenance channel. The carriage repair workshop has eight heavy and six light lattice trusses. On the side of the locomotive shed stand five triumphal arch-shaped portals with rooms built in below them such as offices and storage areas. In the south-west corner a tiled sanitary facility. Along the length of the repair workshop a work channel.
Valuation.
The locomotive shed together with carriage repair workshop is of general importance. The building has cultural-historical importance as an expression of a socio-economic, technical and typological development, particularly because of the construction with double steel main trusses and hinged bearings. Moreover, the building has architectural historical value because of the place it occupies in the architect's oeuvre. It is by now a rare example of a design in which Van Heukelom combines a steel lattice structure with stone and glass and therefore also has industrial-archaeological value. It is the only example of such a rectangular shed in the architect's work. It has ensemble value as an important component of the entire complex and is a rare example of a locomotive shed with a particularly special construction for that time with a wide span of 35 metres and a particular lightness combined with optimal use of daylight.
