Inleiding
De APPèLPLAATS behorend bij het complex van het voormalige concentratiekamp Vught ligt aan de zuidelijke zijde van het eigenlijke concentratiekamp, direct ten noorden van het als complexonderdeel 7 omschreven poortgebouw/ Kommandantur. De appèlplaats werd aangelegd in 1943. De plaats was bestemd voor het massale appèl waaraan de gevangenen van het concentratiekamp twee maal per dag moesten deelnemen. De plaats had oorspronkelijk grotere afmetingen: door bebouwing van de meest noordelijke helft van de appèlplaats is de open ruimte gehalveerd.
Omschrijving
De appèlplaats bestaat uit een open, rechthoekig terrein aan de zuidelijke zijde van het terrein van het concentratiekamp (ten noorden van het SS-terrein). De plaats mat oorspronkelijk circa 50 bij 100 meter, met een noord-zuid gerichte lengteas. De appèlplaats werd zowel in de lengte als de breedte in het midden doorkruist door een smal, door middel van klinkers verhard pad (heden nog aanwezig). De appèlplaats werd aan de zuidzijde afgesloten door de Kommandantur/het poortgebouw, aan de oost- en westzijde door respectievelijk de keuken/wasserij en een administratiegebouw en rondom de noordelijke helft door barakken voor gevangenen. Heden is de appèlplaats door bebouwing van de noordelijke helft gehalveerd.
Waardering
De appèlplaats, behorend bij het voormalige concentratiekamp Vught, is van algemeen belang. De appèlplaats bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een historische ontwikkeling: als onderdeel van een door de bezetter tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog gebouwd concentratiekampcomplex bezit de appèlplaats grote historische waarde. Voorts bezit de appèlplaats als herinnering aan de behandeling van de gevangenen in het concentratiekamp grote historische waarde. De appèlplaats is van belang als illustratie van een typologische ontwikkeling. De appèlplaats bezit ensemblewaarde als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat historisch van (inter-)nationaal belang is. The PARADE GROUND belonging to the complex of the former concentration camp Vught lies on the southern side of the actual concentration camp, directly north of the gate building/Kommandantur described as complex component 7.
