Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The GATEHOUSE belonging to the complex of the former concentration camp Vught is located on the southern side of the actual concentration camp and forms, as it were, a separation between the SS grounds and the concentration camp grounds. Prisoners entered the actual concentration camp from this gatehouse. The building, which was also called the "Kommandantur", had on the northern side a balcony from where armed SS officers supervised the prisoner roll call. The "Kommandantur" also functioned as housing for the SS personnel responsible for guarding. The gatehouse was constructed in 1943 and displays a Craft language of forms, with references to the design idiom of the Stuttgarter Schule. The gatehouse is currently used as an office building at the Van Brederokazerne and has been extensively modernised internally.
Description
The gatehouse has an elongated rectangular floor plan and comprises one storey under a slightly overhanging gabled roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. Above the front facade (southern side) an elongated roof dormer running across almost the entire width of the roof section, above the rear facade six separate roof dormers. In the front and rear facade the gatehouse has arched windows, fitted with frame windows with small glazing bars. The facades of the gatehouse are built in machine-made brick, with timber framing applied in the top gable above the door. The gatehouse displays a symmetrical composition. In the middle a higher projecting central pavilion, beneath a transversely placed gabled roof. In this higher central pavilion is situated the gate to the concentration camp grounds, closed at the top by a flat segmental arch. The top gable of this central pavilion is fitted with timber framing. In the front facade a composite straight-topped window with three frame windows with small glazing bars has been installed on the upper storey. On either side of the passage the rooms in the central pavilion are fitted with small four-pane windows. To the left and right of the central pavilion ten bays, each containing a pair of adjacent windows.
The rear facade, which overlooks the roll call square (complex component 8), displays the same composition. In the central pavilion above the gate is situated a deep balcony, furnished on the front side with timber posts with carved timber detail. From this balcony SS officers supervised the daily prisoner roll calls. In the gable ends of the gatehouse on the ground floor arched windows, on the upper storey an emergency exit with steel staircase, with two straight-topped windows beside it, fitted with frame windows with small glazing bars. Entirely at the top of the gable ends a small straight-topped window.
The interior of the gatehouse has been modernised over the years.
