Inleiding
De GARAGE behorend bij het complex van het voormalige concentratiekampVught, is gelegen aan de noordelijke zijde van het SS-terrein aan de zuidzijde van het concentratiekamp. De garage werd opgetrokken in 1943 en toont een Ambachtelijke vormentaal met verwijzingen naar de Stuttgarter Schule. Heden wordt het stalgebouw gebruikt als kantoorgebouw bij de Van Brederokazerne. Het inwendige van het voormalige garagegebouw is ingrijpend gewijzigd en gemoderniseerd.
Omschrijving
De garage heeft een globaal U-vormige plattegrond, bestaand uit een langgerekte oost-west gerichte vleugel met haaks daarop aan beide uiteinden twee kortere vleugels. Het gebouw telt n bouwlaag onder een samengesteld, licht overstekend zadeldak, gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen. De gevels van het gebouw zijn opgetrokken in baksteen, in het hoger opgetrokken poortgedeelte van het garagegebouw is daarnaast houten vakwerk toegepast. De gevels zijn voorzien van getoogde vensters, voorzien van stolpramen met kleine roedenverdeling. De naar het zuiden gerichte voorgevel van het garagegebouw is symmetrisch en heeft in het midden een hoger opgetrokken, licht risalerend bouwdeel met een topgevel en dwars geplaatst zadeldak. Dit middendeel fungeert als doorrijpoort naar het achtergelegen terrein. In het midden hiervan een grote, door een vlakke segmentboog afgesloten opening voor de poort. De in houten vakwerk met metselmozaek uitgevoerde topgevel boven de poort heeft een hoog getoogd venster met stolpraam en kleine roedenverdeling. De vertrekken aan weerszijden van de poort hebben een getoogd venster. Aan weerszijden van de middenrisaliet met poort tien vensters.
In de achtergevel van de langgerekte oost-west gerichte vleugel is de vensterindeling in de middenrisaliet identiek aan de voorgevel. Aan weerszijden van de middenrisaliet een travee met getoogd venster, hiernaast een vijftal hoge dubbele houten deuren.
De korte vleugels aan de oostelijke en westelijke zijde van het garagegebouw hebben in de buitengevels kleine rechtgesloten vensters met vierruits ramen. De achtergevels langs de binnenzijde van het U-vormige gebouw hebben evenals de langgerekte vleugel grotere getoogde vensters. De kopgevels van het gebouw zijn voorzien van een door een segmentboog afgesloten achteringang met dubbele houten deuren.
Het inwendige van het garagegebouw is in de loop der tijd ingrijpend gewijzigd en gemoderniseerd.
Waardering
Het garagegebouw behorend bij het complex van het voormalige concentratiekamp Vught is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een historische ontwikkeling: als onderdeel van een tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de bezetter gebouwd concentratiekampcomplex is het garagegebouw van historisch belang. Voorts is het garagegebouw van belang als illustratie van een typologische ontwikkeling. Introduction
The GARAGE belonging to the complex of the former concentration camp Vught is located on the northern side of the SS-terrain on the southern side of the concentration camp. The garage was constructed in 1943 and displays a Craftsman vocabulary of forms with references to the Stuttgarter Schule. Today the stable building is used as an office building at the Van Bredero barracks. The interior of the former garage building has been substantially altered and modernised.
Description
The garage has a broadly U-shaped floor plan, consisting of a long east-west oriented wing with two shorter wings at right angles to both ends. The building has one storey under a composite, slightly overhanging gabled roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. The facades of the building are constructed in brick, and in the higher constructed gate section of the garage building wooden half-timbering is additionally applied. The facades are furnished with arched windows, fitted with sash windows with small glazing bars. The south-facing main facade of the garage building is symmetrical and has in the centre a higher constructed, slightly projecting building section with a stepped gable and transversely placed gabled roof. This central section functions as a drive-through gate to the terrain behind. In the centre of this a large opening enclosed by a flat segmental arch for the gate. The stepped gable executed in wooden half-timbering with brick infill above the gate has a high arched window with sash window and small glazing bars. The rooms on either side of the gate have an arched window. On either side of the central projecting section with gate ten windows.
In the rear facade of the long east-west oriented wing the window arrangement in the central projecting section is identical to the main facade. On either side of the central projecting section one bay with arched window, next to this five high double wooden doors.
The short wings on the eastern and western side of the garage building have in the outer facades small square windows with four-pane frames. The rear facades along the interior of the U-shaped building have, like the long wing, larger arched windows. The end facades of the building are furnished with a rear entrance enclosed by a segmental arch with double wooden doors.
The interior of the garage building has been substantially altered and modernised over the course of time.
