Inleiding
Het WACHTGEBOUW behorend bij het voormalige concentratiekamp Vught is gelegen bij de ingang aan de oostzijde van het kampterrein, aan de westelijke zijde van de Lunettenlaan. Het wachtgebouw werd opgetrokken in 1943. Het U-vormige gebouw vertoont een ambachtelijke bouwstijl met verwijzingen naar het vormenidioom van de Stuttgarter Schule. Het gebouw doet heden nog steeds dienst als wachtgebouw, behorend bij de Van Brederokazerne. Het interieur van het wachtgebouw is later sterk gemoderniseerd en tevens hebben zich aan de buitenzijde enige wijzigingen voorgedaan: op de zuidwestelijke hoek van het gebouw is de vensterindeling gewijzigd en in de zuidgevel is een modern loket aangebracht.
Omschrijving
Het wachtgebouw heeft een U-vormige plattegrond, waarvan de gesloten zijde langs de Lunettenlaan ligt. Het gebouw telt één bouwlaag onder een geknikt schilddak, gedekt met verbeterde Hollandse pannen. De drie vleugels van het wachtgebouw hebben een min of meer gelijke lengte en tellen tien versterassen. De muren zijn opgetrokken in baksteen. Boven de noordoostelijkehoek een schoorsteen. Langs het dak is een mastgoot aangebracht. De ingang van het wachtgebouw is gelegen aan de zuidelijke zijde van het gebouw, in een op de zuidoostelijke hoek aangebrachte loggia. Deze loggia heeft in de zuidelijke en oostelijke gevel een soort arcade, bestaande uit segmentboogvormige openingen. De gevels van het wachthuis zijn voorzien van getoogde vensters, waarin stolpramen met kleine roedenverdeling. De vensterindeling is aan de linkerzijde van de zuidgevel gewijzigd: hier zijn een modern loket en geheel links een modern venster aangebracht. Aansluitend op de zuidelijke gevel, direct links van de loggia, een poort met bakstenen pijlers, waartussen een slagboom. Aan de linkerzijde van de noordelijke gevel is een laag segmentboogvormig poortje aangebracht (wellicht een hondenpoortje).
De kopgevel van de noordelijke vleugel is vensterloos, bij de kopgevel van de zuidelijke vleugel zijn twee vensters later dichtgemetseld. Tussen de twee kopgevels is een bakstenen muur opgetrokken, afgedekt met een ezelsrug.
Waardering
Het wachtgebouw behorend bij het voormalige concentratiekamp Vught is van algemeen belang. Het gebouw bezit cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een historische ontwikkeling: als onderdeel van een tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog door de bezetter gebouwd concentratiekampcomplex is het gebouw van historische waarde. Voorts is het wachthuis van belang als illustratie van een typologische ontwikkeling. Het wachtgebouw bezit ensemblewaarde als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat historisch van (inter-)nationaal belang is. Introduction
The GUARD BUILDING belonging to the former Vught concentration camp is situated at the entrance on the eastern side of the camp site, on the western side of the Lunettenlaan. The guard building was erected in 1943. The U-shaped building displays a craftsmanship-based architectural style with references to the formal idiom of the Stuttgarter Schule. The building currently still serves as a guard building, belonging to the Van Brederokazerne. The interior of the guard building was later substantially modernised and there have also been some alterations to the exterior: on the southwestern corner of the building the window arrangement has been altered and a modern hatch has been installed in the south facade.
Description
The guard building has a U-shaped floor plan, of which the closed side runs along the Lunettenlaan. The building comprises one storey under a hipped roof, covered with improved Dutch tiles. The three wings of the guard building are of roughly equal length and each contains ten bays. The walls are built of brick. Above the northeastern corner a chimney. Along the roof a roof gutter has been installed. The entrance to the guard building is situated on the southern side of the building, in a loggia installed on the southeastern corner. This loggia has in the southern and eastern facade a kind of arcade, consisting of segmental arch openings. The facades of the guard house are provided with arched windows, containing sash windows with small glazing bars. The window arrangement has been altered on the left side of the south facade: here a modern hatch and on the far left a modern window have been installed. Adjacent to the southern facade, directly to the left of the loggia, a gate with brick pillars, between which a barrier. On the left side of the northern facade a low segmental arch gateway has been installed (possibly a dog gate).
The gable end of the northern wing is without windows, at the gable end of the southern wing two windows were later bricked up. Between the two gable ends a brick wall has been constructed, topped with a roof-ridge brick.
Valuation
The guard building belonging to the former Vught concentration camp is of general importance. The building possesses cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a historical development: as part of a concentration camp complex built by the occupying power during the Second World War, the building is of historical value. Furthermore, the guard building is of importance as an illustration of a typological development. The guard building possesses ensemble value as an essential component of a larger whole, which is of historical importance of (inter-)national significance.
