Inleiding.
GRAFMONUMENT op het kerkhof achter de Rooms Katholieke kerk Heilige Johannes Geboorte. Het graf ligt in het middenvak van het linkergedeelte van de begraafplaats, dicht achter de kerk.
Omschrijving.
Grafkist met wapenschild en opschrift op deksel: "DOMINE DELEXI DECOREM/ DOMUS TUAE ET LOCUM/ HABITATIONIS GLORIAE TUAE/ PS. XXV.U" en R.I.P. De opstand draagt een witte stenen plaquette met het opschrift: "HIER/ WACHT DE / VERRIJZENIS DE E. HEER/ J.M.A. SMOLDERS/ PASTOOR DEZER PAROCHIE/ GEB. TE ST. GEERTUIDENBERG 15 APRIL 1848/ OVERL. TE NIEUWKUIK/ 7 OCT. 1915. Op het graf staat een kruis, omhangen met stola, op het kruis een afbeelding van een priesterkelk met hosti, een wierookvat, een lelie en druivenrank.
Waardering.
Het grafmonument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorisch belang wegens typologie en als voorbeeld van de katholieke grafcultuur. Het is van architectuurhistorisch belang wegens ornamentiek, vormgeving en materiaalgebruik. Het is gaaf bewaard gebleven.

Grave chest with coat of arms and inscription on lid: "DOMINE DELEXI DECOREM/ DOMUS TUAE ET LOCUM/ HABITATIONIS GLORIAE TUAE/ PS. XXV.U" and R.I.P. The front bears a white stone plaque with the inscription: "HERE/ AWAITS THE / RESURRECTION THE HONOURABLE/ J.M.A. SMOLDERS/ PARISH PRIEST OF THIS PARISH/ BORN AT ST. GEERTUIDENBERG 15 APRIL 1848/ DIED AT NIEUWKUIK/ 7 OCT. 1915. On the grave stands a cross, hung with a stole, on the cross an image of a priest's chalice with host, a censer, a lily and vine leaves.
