Inleiding.

Introduction.

LEATHER TANNERY with adjacent vat yard, built in artisanal-traditional building style. Possibly established around 1850 as a small billiard factory and converted around 1880 into a tannery for H. van Rijckevorsel. The tannery is situated to the south of the aforementioned tannery dwelling and tannery and is barely visible from the public road. The building is oriented north-south, with the ridge line perpendicular to the Veerseweg.

The grinding of oak bark, to obtain the raw material necessary for the tanning process, took place in the standard mill (the 'Planken Molen') located on the opposite side of the Veerseweg, which is no longer present. The object remained in use until the early nineteen-nineties.

Description.

The building, consisting of tarred wooden planks and brickwork, occupies a rectangular floor plan and comprises a wet house and a drying loft beneath a gabled roof covered with Dutch tiles and with wind vanes. On the west facade a currently simplified wooden outbuilding beneath a lean-to roof (formerly a wood storage shed). On the north facade a block-shaped single-storey outbuilding beneath a flat roof. Wet house built in English bond with partly simplified, multi-light windows provided with small glazing bars on brick plinths in the east and south facades. Clamped, arched wooden entrance door in the west facade. Double, glazed entrance door in the northern end facade. Boarded drying loft with ventilation shutters. In the north facade wooden clamped shutters, a hoisting installation beneath a small lean-to roof and two two-light windows in the gable top. Ceiling with wooden beams and a possibly older round tree trunk used as a brace beam spanning the entire width and resting on struts on the inside of the load-bearing brick wall. Interior in poor condition with possible traces of soaking vats. On the site on the north-west side various (remains of) tanning vats. These are vats of approximately two by two metres dug in groups into the ground and closable with wooden cover plates where hides were laid horizontally and layer by layer scattered with oak bark.

Valuation.

The leather tannery with vat yard is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical values. It is of importance as a particular expression of economic developments in the Brabant leather industry at the end of the nineteenth century. It is of importance for the typological development of early tannery buildings. The object has ensemble values. Together with the other tannery building and the tannery dwelling, the other tanning vats on the interior yard and the tannery complex at Veerseweg 56-58, it forms a characteristic part of a historically grown tanners' ensemble on the Veerseweg.

The object is of importance owing to typological recognisability as a vat tannery-at-home. It has become rare owing to the still numerous tanning vats present.
