Inleiding.
Op de begraafplaats gelegen FAMILIEGRAF van de familie Smits uit 1872. Stilistisch vertoont het invloeden van het Neo-Classicisme. De familie Smits was een bekende bierbrouwersfamilie, onder andere grondlegger van de voormalige ambachtelijke brouwerij 'De Gekroonde Bel' aan de Heuvelstraat en de modernere opvolger met dezelfde naam aan de Bredaseweg.
Omschrijving.
Het deels gefrijnde hardstenen familiegraf bestaat uit een aantal piramidaal aaneengeschakelde graven en beslaat een kruisvorm met verlengde noord-zuidas. Op het snijpunt van de kruisarmen ligt het hoogste blokvormige graf met naar vier zijden gerichte topgevelachtige frontons geornamenteerd met eierlijsten. Akroterieën op de hoeken. Kruising noklijnen bekroond met een vierzijdig kruis met Christusmonogram en eeuwigheidssymbolen. In de gevelvelden de ingebeitelde namen van de overledenen en bronzen medaillons met afbeeldingen (Christusmonogram, Alfa en Omega, schaap, leeuw en adelaar) die symbolisch verwijzen naar de eeuwigheid, naar Christus als de hoeder der mensheid, naar de Opstanding en naar de Verrijzenis.
Aan het hoge middenblok grenzen aan alle vier de zijden lagere graven. De dekplaten van de graven aan de west- en oostzijde zijn als lessenaardak aangebracht, de graven aan de noord- en zuidzijde hebben een zadeldak met noklijst en gedecoreerde lijsten aan de voet van de schilden. Zijwanden hiervan met bovenlangs lopend tandlijstje en aan de uiteinden gecanneleerde pseudo-pilasters. Kopwanden met epitaven 'IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI' en 'NON CONFUNDAR IN AETERNUM' en de namen der overledenen. Aan de graven aan de noord- en zuidzijde grenzen nog lagere, slechts gering boven het maaiveld uitstekende tomben waarin de meest recentelijk overleden personen van de familie Smits zijn bijgezet.
Waardering.
Het graf van de familie Smits is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de ontwikkeling in de katholieke grafcultuur na het midden van de negentiende eeuw. Daarnaast als uitdrukking van de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van Oosterhout in relatie tot de regionaal bekende brouwersfamilie Smits. Verder vanwege het belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van grafmonumenten van de sociale bovenklasse.
Het object bezit architectuur- en kunsthistorische waarde wegens de esthetische kwaliteit van de architectonische vierzijdige opzet, de detaillering en verzorgde ornamentiek in met name de medaillons. Description.
The partly finely dressed sandstone family grave consists of a number of pyramidally linked graves and covers a cross shape with extended north-south axis. At the intersection of the cross arms lies the highest block-shaped grave with gable-like frontons facing four sides decorated with egg-and-dart mouldings. Acroteria on the corners. Intersection of ridge lines crowned with a four-sided cross with Christogram and symbols of eternity. In the facade fields the engraved names of the deceased and bronze medallions with representations (Christogram, Alpha and Omega, lamb, lion and eagle) which symbolically refer to eternity, to Christ as the protector of mankind, to the Resurrection and to the Rising. At the high central block adjoin on all four sides lower graves. The covering slabs of the graves on the west and east sides are arranged as a sloping roof, the graves on the north and south sides have a gabled roof with ridge line and decorated mouldings at the foot of the hipped ends. Side walls with tooth moulding running along the top and fluted pseudo-pilasters at the ends. Head walls with epitaphs 'IN TE DOMINE SPERAVI' and 'NON CONFUNDAR IN AETERNUM' and the names of the deceased. At the graves on the north and south sides adjoin even lower tombs, only slightly protruding above ground level, in which the most recently deceased members of the Smits family have been buried.
