Omschrijving
Inleiding.
Centraal op het Mariaplein te Helden-Dorp staande POMP uit 1865, gegoten
door ijzergieterij Giesbers en Van Deun. Stilistisch vertoont de waterpomp
invloeden van de Neo-Renaissance. IJzergieterij Giesbers en Van Deun was
gevestigd in Roermond, halverwege de negentiende eeuw de tweede
industriestad van Limburg. De firma Giesbers en Van Deun goot indertijd voor
diverse gemeenten waterpompen. Hiervan zijn er thans nog maar enkele bewaard
gebleven. Na een renovatie in de jaren negentig van de twintigste eeuw,
waarbij het binnenwerk van de waterpomp werd verwijderd, heeft de voorheen
verplaatste pomp haar oorspronkelijke situering op het plein teruggekregen.
Indertijd betrok ze haar water van een nabijgelegen, ruim zes meter diepe
welwaterput. Het oorspronkelijk zo waterrijke Mariaplein staat in de
volksmond nog steeds bekend als 'De Pool' (waterkuil, waterplas).
Omschrijving.
De ranke, gietijzeren waterpomp beslaat een vierkante plattegrond met
afgeschuinde hoeken en is opgebouwd uit een breder tweedelig basement, het
pomplichaam en een bekronende hoed met groot overstek. Voor de pomp ligt een
gefrijnde hardstenen waterbak. Basement en hoed zijn omzoomd met
sierlijsten. In het basement het opschrift 'VAN DEUN / ROERMOND / 1865'. Het
versoberde pomplichaam bestaat uit casementen. Aan de voorzijde een
decoratieve zwanenhoofdkraan, aan de zijkant de zwengel met gebogen
handgreep. De hoed wordt bekroond met een palmet.
Waardering.
De pomp aan het Mariaplein is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft
cultuurhistorische waarden als uitdrukking van de historische collectieve
watervoorziening en als herinnering aan de ijzergieterijen en industriële
ontwikkeling van Roermond in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw.
Daarnaast is het object van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van
Limburgse dorpspompen. Het object bezit kunsthistorische waarde vanwege de
esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp en de sierlijke detaillering van met
name de zwanenhoofdkraan. Het object bezit ensemblewaarde vanwege de
karakteristieke stedenbouwkundige ligging centraal op het dorpsplein van
Helden-Dorp. Het object bezit zeldzaamheidswaarde als voorbeeld van thans
nog maar sporadisch bewaard gebleven, maar ooit in serie geproduceerd
straatmeubilair, en als relief van de geschiedenis van de
drinkwatervoorziening.

Introduction.
A PUMP from 1865 standing centrally on the Mariaplein in Helden-Dorp, cast by iron foundry Giesbers and Van Deun. Stylistically the water pump shows influences of the Neo-Renaissance. Iron foundry Giesbers and Van Deun was established in Roermond, halfway through the nineteenth century the second industrial city of Limburg. The firm Giesbers and Van Deun cast water pumps for various municipalities at the time. Only a few of these are now still preserved. After a renovation in the nineteen-nineties of the twentieth century, during which the interior of the water pump was removed, the previously relocated pump has regained its original position on the square. Originally it drew its water from a nearby well-water pit just over six metres deep. The originally water-rich Mariaplein is still known in the vernacular as 'De Pool' (water-pit, water-pool).

The slender cast-iron water pump occupies a square ground plan with bevelled corners and is constructed from a broader two-part basement, the pump body and a crowning hood with large overhang. In front of the pump is a chamfered hard stone water basin. Basement and hood are bordered with decorative mouldings. In the basement the inscription 'VAN DEUN / ROERMOND / 1865'. The restrained pump body consists of casements. On the front a decorative swan-head tap, on the side the pump handle with curved grip. The hood is crowned with a palmette.
Valuation.
The pump at the Mariaplein is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical values as an expression of historical collective water provision and as a reminder of the iron foundries and industrial development of Roermond in the second half of the nineteenth century. Moreover the object is of importance for the typological development of Limburgian village pumps. The object possesses artistic-historical value because of the aesthetic qualities of the design and the graceful detailing of notably the swan-head tap. The object possesses ensemble value because of the characteristic urban-planning location centrally on the village square of Helden-Dorp. The object possesses rarity value as an example of street furniture now only sporadically preserved but once mass-produced, and as a record of the history of drinking water provision.
