Inleiding.
Ten noorden van kazemat 539 staat op de westelijke kade van het Defensiekanaal de S (3a) KAZEMAT 540, daterende uit 1939-1940. De wal is ter plaatse afgegraven.
Omschrijving.
De kazemat geeft door de schietgaten flankerend en frontaal vuur op het voorterrein. De kazemat is gaaf bewaard gebleven en vertoont zware gevechtssporen. De gehele frontzijde is door artillerie, pantserafweergeschut en mitrailleurvuur zwaar beschadigd, waardoor grote delen van de wapening blootliggen. Direct ten noorden van kazemat 540 lag tot 1941 de G-kazemat (180lv) 541, die frontaal vuur op de Snipweg kon geven. Deze weg kruiste ter plaatse de Peel-Raamstelling.
Waardering.
De kazemat is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een culturele en geografische ontwikkeling, namelijk de versterking en daaropvolgende verdediging van Nederland tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog en is als zodanig een belangrijk document van de militaire geschiedenis. Het is van architectuur- en bouwhistorisch belang wegens het bijzondere materiaalgebruik en de toepassing van moderne materialen en technieken, met name in de verwerking van gewapend beton. Het heeft ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een groter geheel, dat cultuurhistorisch van belang is en is van belang wegens de hoogwaardige kwaliteit van de bebouwing en de historisch-ruimtelijke relatie met wegen, wateren en bodemgesteldheid. North of casemate 539, on the western embankment of the Defensiekanaal, stands the S (3a) CASEMATE 540, dating from 1939-1940. The embankment has been excavated at this location.

The casemate delivers flanking and frontal fire on the forward terrain through its loopholes. The casemate has been well preserved and shows heavy combat marks. The entire front is heavily damaged by artillery, anti-tank guns and machine-gun fire, exposing large parts of the reinforcement. Directly north of casemate 540 stood until 1941 the G-casemate (180lv) 541, which could deliver frontal fire on the Snipweg. This road crossed the Peel-Raam position at this location.
Valuation.
The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and as such is an important document of military history.
