Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
When in 1937 it was decided to extend the Peel Defence Line also to the north of the difficult-to-traverse and easy-to-defend-at-the-accesses Peel area between Deurne and Weert, it was decided, entirely in the spirit of the times, that protection of the main resistance zone of the line required first and foremost defence against armoured vehicles and tanks. To this end, the construction of an anti-tank ditch in the front line was necessary, the course of which was surveyed in 1937. This ANTI-TANK DITCH, then known as the Defence Canal, now Peel Canal, was constructed in 1939. Since the ditch also aimed to improve water management in the agricultural region, it was possible to dig the canal as part of a public works scheme. The course of the ditch was partly determined by the already existing Rode Beek, partly by the location of already existing clearances, the water management requirements. Furthermore, obtaining the most favourable possible field of fire was an element that had to be taken into account. At Mill, these factors determined the north-south directed course, provided with characteristic sharp bends.
Description.
The Defence or Peel Canal has retained its entirely original course at Mill. In total, the canal is nine kilometres long here. The canal is ten metres wide and (originally) 1.8 metres deep. Directly behind the locks (2) the width in the bays is slightly greater. The slopes of the canal have retained their original profile only at the locks, where they are executed in concrete. These steep slopes were meant to make crossing by tanks or armoured vehicles impossible. Outside the locks, all slopes are earthen; over the last fifty years the profile of these has become less steep.
Valuation.
The Defence Canal is of importance. It has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the strengthening and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance due to the distinctive use of materials and the application of modern techniques, in particular in the adaptation of water management for military purposes. It has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole, which is of cultural-historical importance and is of importance due to the high-quality nature of the buildings and the historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions. It has great experiential value and as a large-scale military complex and reminder of an important episode in national history is rare.
