Inleiding.

G.H. Schlosmachers Handelsmaatschappij'.

Introduction.

A FACTORY BUILDING located outside the centre of Echt, built in the years 1940-1941 by architect J.P. Albert from Beek in a formal language that shows influences of the Nieuwe Bouwen. The disposition of the individual building volumes, the use of materials, the applied construction techniques, the industrial function, the clear internal organisation and the functional positioning all refer to the architectural concepts propagated by the Nieuwe Bouwen. The client was the 'N.V. G.H. Schlosmachers Handelsmaatschappij'.

The factory is situated near a loading and unloading place in the adjacent Julianakanaal. Furthermore, the architect made use of the terrain conditions as he found them in 1940 in the architectural design; the building was constructed in a clay pit, created by the excavation of clay for brick production at the adjacent 'Echter Steenfabriek'.

Until 1949 the factory served as a bakery raw materials trade and manufacturing business under the name 'Buijs en Schlosmachers'. During the Second World War the building was used by the Germans as a barracks and observation post and consequently sustained several direct hits from grenades in 1944. The war damage was repaired in 1946. From 1949 the building was used by the firm Schobbers for the storage and production of agricultural seeds.

The building has been only slightly simplified and modified over the years. A large vertical stairwell window on the gable end of the silo was removed and in the early 1990s several cuts were made in the roof and western facade for the placement of various (extraction) installations. Internally the office space and canteen were modernised and the former laboratory was converted into a dwelling. In 1989-1990 a single-storey hall was added in the angle of the L-shaped factory building.

Description.

The factory is composed of three interconnected, dissimilar building volumes with horizontal and vertical accents. Due to its location in a clay pit the factory has a basement that runs beneath the entire building. The three building volumes together form an L-shaped ground plan.

On the south side there is a two-storey volume (with basement) erected in 1940 with a flat roof that has a rectangular ground plan. The brick facades of the two storeys are white rendered and contrast with the unrendered basement, which lies below ground level but is exposed up to the window sill for the admission of light and air. In the facade walls of the industrial halls, the office and canteen are interrupted horizontal window strips (which mostly still retain the original multi-light steel windows on ceramic tile sills) and a basket arch-shaped entrance with a secondary access door. In the south-eastern corner is the former laboratory with on the ground floor an arched door opening with rectangular windows on either side provided with divided fanlights and on the first floor short horizontal window strips as mentioned above. Above the windows of the brick external walls are large lintels; the construction of the interior consists of reinforced concrete columns on which beams (partly with bevelled connection points) in one direction support concrete floors. Behind the entrance door a ramp leads to the basement. Among the other preserved elements in the interior worthy of mention are: wooden step ladders to the first floor, a yellow-tiled wall in the former kitchen, the remains of a goods lift and furthermore a coloured tile wainscoting, a hatch window and a multi-coloured tile floor in the office section.

The central building volume of the factory is formed by a tall concrete silo building with flat roofs, erected in 1941 and intended for seed storage. The symmetrical silo building is also white rendered and has a narrow rectangular ground plan. The middle section is built higher and projects, at ground level supported by a canopy on concrete corbels above a secondary access door. Centrally six drop windows arranged one above the other with three lights for the illumination of the stairwell behind. This gable end is closed off by an arch form that breaks through the flat roof line. In the side walls of the silo are various circular windows with cross-shaped glazing bars.

On the north side is a horizontal volume containing dispatch and storage space, with a rectangular ground plan. Construction began in 1940 but was completed in 1941. It consists of two storeys with a flat roof and a basement partly exposed on the north side. Both storeys and basement are white rendered. In the western facade are two characteristic continuous horizontal window strips positioned one above the other with steel windows. Furthermore a loading platform and a later covered dispatch exit. A ramp leads to the basement in front of the north facade. In the north facade various interrupted horizontal window strips with windows as mentioned above. The construction of the interior consists of concrete columns on which beams (partly with bevelled connection points) run in various directions supporting concrete floors. Among the further preserved interior elements worthy of mention are several reinforced concrete filling openings (beneath the storage spaces) and some wooden step ladders.

Assessment.

The factory building is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical values. It is important as a distinctive expression of economic developments in the bakery raw materials industry. Furthermore, it is important for the typological development of factories with silo buildings.

The object has architectural-historical values. It is important for architectural history because of the late application of a factory aesthetic related to the Nieuwe Bouwen and it is important for the history of building construction.

The object has ensemble values. It is of particular significance because of the direct relationship between its location in the former clay pit of the neighbouring Echter Steenfabriek and the architectural design of the object. Furthermore because of the historical-spatial relationship with the Julianakanaal and the nearby loading and unloading place. The object is also of particular importance because of its image-defining and striking silhouette. The object is important because of the intactness of the main form and the preserved elements in the interior.
