Inleiding
In de noordwestelijke hoek van de algemene begraafplaats van Sambeek staat een ongedateerd en anoniem GRAFKRUIS, dat waarschijnlijk uit het eerste kwart van de twintigste eeuw dateert.
Omschrijving
Dit gietijzeren grafkruis is niet ajour en wijkt daarmee (met grafkruis 525224) af van de andere op de begraafplaats. In het centrum een opgelegde gietijzeren afbeelding van de gekruisigde Christus, omgeven door een stralenkrans; daarboven het opschrift INRI. De kruisarmen worden gesierd door florale motieven en eindigen in gestileerde ronde bladmotieven. Op de voet van het smalle en hoge kruis zijn een rouwende Maria, Maria Magdalena en Johannes afgebeeld. Het kruis is gesteld op een hardstenen gebosseerde sokkel.
Waardering
Het gietijzeren grafmonument is van algemeen belang. Het heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociale en geestelijke ontwikkeling, in het bijzonder de ontwikkeling van de katholieke grafcultuur, het is tevens van belang voor de typologische ontwikkeling van het gietijzeren grafmonument. In the northwestern corner of the general cemetery of Sambeek stands an undated and anonymous GRAVE CROSS, which probably dates from the first quarter of the twentieth century.
Description
This cast iron grave cross is not openwork and thus differs (with grave cross 525224) from the others in the cemetery. In the centre an applied cast iron image of the crucified Christ, surrounded by a halo; above it the inscription INRI. The cross arms are adorned with floral motifs and end in stylized round leaf motifs. At the foot of the narrow and tall cross are depicted a grieving Mary, Mary Magdalen and John. The cross is set on a hardstone bossed pedestal.
Valuation
The cast iron grave monument is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a social and spiritual development, in particular the development of Catholic grave culture; it is also of importance for the typological development of the cast iron grave monument. It has ensemble values as part of a larger whole. It has been preserved in good condition. As part of a coherent series of cast iron grave monuments it is rare.
