Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Former DISTILLERY, built on behalf of the firm P. Hoppe in 1858 in sober Eclectic style on the Nieuwe Haven. The distillery is typologically representative of the housing of this specific production phase within the gin industry in the last major period of prosperity (1850-1880) of the (small-scale) Schiedam gin industry. Characteristic is the asymmetrical facade layout which is the result of the arrangement on the ground floor of the (wider) mash tuns on one side of the distillery and the kettle apparatus on the other side. The positioning of the wide doors left of centre on the upper floor is original. Distilleries usually had only a narrow door at the far left or far right on the upper floor.
NB: The original ashlar pilasters on either side of the carriage entrance have disappeared due to widening of the passage. The openings in the rear facade at ground floor level have been bricked up.
Description
The former distillery is built on a rectangular floor plan and consists of a high ground floor and a loft storey under a tile-covered gabled roof with the ridge direction perpendicular to the street. The front facade is built above a stone plinth in red/grey brick and the rear and side facades in yellow Ijssel brick. Windows are segmental arched and provided with one-and-a-half-brick stretcher relieving arches. The front facade contains on the ground floor left of centre a double, hinged carriage entrance with above it a round-arched fanlight provided with the characteristic spider-web window. The fanlight is provided with a one-and-a-half-brick stretcher relieving arch with a natural stone keystone bearing the building year (1858) engraved within. The entrance is flanked by one window on the left and two on the right with twelve-pane hinged sashes, stone water drips and corner stones. On the first floor there is left of centre a wide segmental-arched double door. The door is crowned by a one-and-a-half-brick stretcher relieving arch and has a natural stone water drip. The door is flanked by one window on the left and two on the right with six-pane windows and natural stone water drips. Directly below the ridge is a circular window with a stucco 'woven' frame. The pointed gable is terminated with an overhanging timber cornice. The right side facade of the building contains at ground floor level four wide windows with twelve-pane hinged sashes with stone corner stones. At the first floor level there are four narrower windows with six-pane windows.
In the rear facade two windows remain at floor level on the left, one of which has been bricked up. In the top of the pointed gable is a circular window with a frame of header masonry.
The wooden gutter is supported by wooden brackets. At the level of the floor joists simple ornamental wall anchors with straight ties have been applied. Only above the doors on the upper floor is there a diamond-head stone.
The internal structure of the former distillery is determined by a composite floor beam. On the ground floor the double lower tie beam is supported by cast-iron columns. The roof truss structure consists of a series of trusses in the form of hanging structures.
Valuation
Former distillery built in sober Eclectic style in 1858, as a characteristic building type for the last major period of prosperity (1850-1880) of (small-scale) Schiedam distillery operations of general interest for its architectural and cultural-historical value, as well as for its image-defining and ensemble value in relation to the other distilleries on the Nieuwe Haven.
