Inleiding

Twee identieke DISTILLEERDERIJEN, gebouwd in 1831 in sobere Traditionele trant.

Introduction

Two identical DISTILLERIES, built in 1831 in sober Traditional style. The distilleries are situated behind one another with their short sides facing each other, originally separated from each other by an alley, nowadays connected by a later-built lower intermediate building.

NB: The complex is nowadays no longer in use as a distillery, but as a storage facility belonging to the complex of Distillery Dirkzwager. The complex was restored in 1979 and at that time stripped of a plaster layer. The intermediate building was probably also built then, erected in old bricks.

Description

The distillery complex consists of two identical two-bay building volumes situated with their short sides against each other, built on a rectangular plan in yellow brick in a running bond, provided with ornamental wall anchors. The double parallel long sides covered with red tiles are concealed behind a double bell gable. The rectangular plan comprises two storeys on a raised ground floor and an attic storey.

The eastern end facade contains on the ground floor to the right of centre the wide entrance with a round-arched gateway and removable window with radial glazing bars. The entrance is flanked by bush-hammered sandstone pilasters. The lintel between door and fanlight does not rest on the pilasters, but is as it were wedged between them. The brick arch has a sandstone keystone. Above this, a small square tile with an inscription has been placed in the facade.

To the left of the entrance are two windows, to the right one window, with glazing bars and slightly arched stretches and sandstone sills. In the sandstone keystones in the corners of the windows old hinges can be seen.

On the first storey above the right-hand window is the narrow door to the former attic storey for drying. For the rest, the storey facade features deeply recessed warehouse windows with four-pane frames and sandstone sills. Inside these windows have wooden lintels. The second storey contains five identical but slightly lower windows.

The gable tops are provided with circular windows with sandstone framing. The western end facade is a mirror image of that on the east side: the access to the attic storey is located here in the leftmost bay.

The long facades are virtually identical: on each storey there are per distillery four windows each with seven brick spacers. Here too the ground floor has six-pane windows and on the storeys deeply recessed four-pane warehouse windows. In the north facade on the first storey on either side of the intermediate structure are narrow wooden doors.

The wooden gutter is supported by consoles. At Noordvest 30 there is in the centre a sandstone tablet with the inscription: 'THE FIRST STONE LAID BY ARNs JOHs BEUKERS ON 15 JULY 1831'. Noordvest 32 bears an identical tablet with the text: 'THE FIRST STONE LAID BY GERs JOHs ARNs BEUKERS ON 15 JULY 1831'.

The internal structure of both premises is largely preserved.

Inside the walls are plastered. In the wooden structure the heavy beam layers in each building on each storey are borne by two corbels with bevelled corners on sandstone bases. In the end facades there are load-bearing half columns of brick.

At the intermediate section the original door openings are visible: material and dimensions are identical to the entrances on the outside, only the wooden doors are missing.

On the storeys at the location of the intermediate section the original facade layout is still visible. The doors and window glass have however been removed.

Valuation

Complex of two identical distilleries, built in 1831 in sober traditional style, representative of Schiedam's rich past as a distilling town, of general importance by virtue of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value. Also of importance by virtue of its ensemble value and townscape value.
