Inleiding

Introduction

The FARMHOUSE built in a Craftsman-traditional style consisting of a dwelling house with a Flemish barn forms part of the complex at Gebroken Dijk 6 in the municipality of Korendijk. The dwelling house was rebuilt after a fire in 1937. The Flemish barn was presumably built of wood halfway through the nineteenth century, but was bricked up in the first decades of the twentieth century.

The interior of the dwelling house has recently (20th century) been largely renewed and is of subsidiary importance.

Description

The farmhouse consists of a transverse house placed in front of a Flemish barn. Both are constructed in yellow Ijssel brick.

The dwelling house, constructed from a rectangular ground plan, is partially cellared and provided with one storey under the roof layer. This transverse house has a hipped roof with grey tiles and red tiles on the ridge and hip rafters. From the front roof slope two roof dormer windows which are provided with pediments and klauwstukken. The walls of the dwelling house are laid in English bond with stretchers above the right-angled windows. Simple wall anchors enliven both the front facade and both side walls. The evenly distributed front facade has five windows with six-pane sash windows and two small cellar windows with theft bars. Above the windows rollshutter boxes have been fitted. The entrance to the dwelling house is located in the right side wall. To the left of the renewed door are two windows with sash windows. To the right of the door is the window of the scullery. This double window with tracery in fanlight and transom was placed in this wall in the 1930s. In the left side wall there are also two windows with sash windows.

The barn has a gabled roof with half-hipped ends and smothered Dutch tiles. The walls are laid in English bond with roll courses around the barn doors and windows. In the right side wall stand double entrance doors with a fixed centre mullion and a fanlight with vertical bars. The rear wall of the barn also contains double entrance doors, a small door and two semicircular windows. The left side wall has only a few small openings and a renewed double window. The barn is built around six H-frame trusses. The barn still retains the original layout with a cow stable against the low side wall, a horse stable at the rear and space for hay storage under the roof.

Valuation

The farmhouse is of general importance owing to its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and ensemble value.

- The farmhouse has cultural-historical value as a fine example of a mixed agricultural enterprise with a very large Flemish barn, which is characteristic of the South Holland islands. Although the farmhouse is no longer used as such, the farmhouse still displays all the characteristics of its original function.

- The farmhouse has architectural-historical value as an example of an agricultural enterprise in the regional Craftsman-traditional building style.

- The farmhouse has ensemble value owing to the spatial-functional and visual coherence with the other complex components and owing to the free-standing location in a bend of the Gebrokendijk.

- The farmhouse has some rarity value owing to the very large Flemish barn which is provided with six H-frame trusses and owing to the completeness of the farmyard with an (intact) summer house.

- The farmhouse is also of importance owing to the recognizability and the high degree of integrity of the exterior and the interior of the business component.
