Inleiding
WINKELWOONHUIS, genaamd 'De drie vergulde Acoleyen', in 1903 in iets gewijzigde vorm gebouwd naar ontwerp van architect C.J.L. Kersbergen uit 1899 in de stijl van de Neo-Hollandse Renaissance. In het pand was een mantelmagazijn gevestigd.
De pui dateert uit 1912, toen het pand bij het links belendende pand werd getrokken.
Het pand maakt onderdeel uit van de aaneengesloten gevelwand van de Markt en behoort samen met het belendende pand Markt 21 tot een complex winkelwoonhuizen aan de Markt.
Omschrijving
Onderkelderd pand op rechthoekige plattegrond van twee bouwlagen met kaplaag. Het zadeldak is deels uitgevoerd met een plat gedeelte en gedekt met rode Hollandse pannen. Het is opgetrokken in schoonmetselwerk met in de identieke trapgevels aan voor- en achterzijde rijke smeedijzeren ankers.
De voorgevel ter breedte van twee vensterassen bestaat uit de houten winkelpui met op de eerste bouwlaag twee rechtgesloten vensters met ontlastingsbogen en boogvelden, hardstenen lekdorpels en schuiframen met bovenlichten voorzien van gekleurd glas-in-lood. In de topgevel een kleiner rechtgesloten venster onder hardstenen latei met schuifraam met driedelig bovenlicht en aan weerszijden smalle vensters. De trapgevel wordt afgesloten met een overhoeks geplaatste toppilaster. De houten winkelpui is uitgevoerd met aan weerszijden een pilaster en is afgesloten met een kroonlijst. Boven de pilasters wordt de lijst afgesloten met een console met gesneden maskerkop. Rechts een paneeldeur. Tussen de pilasters, boven de paneeldeur en de winkelentree, een reeks panelen met gesneden pilasters ertussen, waarboven een reeks van staande rondboogvensters met eveneens gesneden pilasters ertussen, gevuld met gekleurde glas-in-loodramen. In het fries de tekst: 'De drie vergulde Acoleyen'.
De tweeassige achtergevel aan het water van de Wijnhaven bevat op kelderniveau rechtgesloten vensters met stolpramen met achtruitsbovenlicht, op de tweede bouwlaag vensters met ontlastingsbogen, stolpramen met drieruitsbovenlicht. Op de derde bouwlaag schuiframen. Topgevel als voorgevel.
Waardering
Het winkelwoonhuis aan de Markt 21 in 1903 gebouwd naar ontwerp van architect C.J.L. Kersbergen uit 1899 is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde

Cellared building on rectangular floor plan of two storeys with attic storey. The gabled roof is partly executed with a flat section and covered with red Dutch tiles. It is constructed in exposed brickwork with identical stepped gables on front and rear facades decorated with ornamental wrought-iron anchors.
The front facade the width of two window axes consists of the wooden shopfront with on the first storey two straight-topped windows with relieving arches and arch spandrels, stone lekdorpels and sash windows with fanlights furnished with coloured leaded glass. In the gable a smaller straight-topped window under stone lintel with sash window with three-part fanlight and on either side narrow windows. The stepped gable is finished with a diagonally placed top pilaster. The wooden shopfront is executed with a pilaster on either side and is finished with a cornice. Above the pilasters the moulding is terminated with a corbel with carved mask head. On the right a panelled door. Between the pilasters, above the panelled door and the shop entrance, a series of panels with carved pilasters between them, above which a series of standing round-arch windows with equally carved pilasters between them, filled with coloured leaded glass windows. In the frieze the text: 'The Three Gilded Acolytes'.
The two-axis rear facade facing the water of the Wijnhaven contains on cellar level straight-topped windows with casement windows with three-part fanlight, on the second storey windows with relieving arches, casement windows with three-part fanlight.
