Inleiding

Description
Introduction
19th-century CEMETERY, component of the complex Algemene Begraafplaats Jaffa. The cemetery was founded in 1868 as a private cemetery on the territory of the then abolished municipality Vrijenban. The initiators of the foundation were Messrs D. Houtzager (also the first municipal director of the cemetery), G. de Ronde and B. Veth jr., who had the layout designed by the municipal architect C.J. de Bruyn Kops. The director's residence, also built in 1868, became the residence of the municipal cemetery manager in 1874, when the cemetery was taken over by the municipality. In 1874 the cemetery took over the function of the Gemeentelijke Begraafplaats de Haagpoort (at the site of the present Kalverbos), which was closed that year, and from that moment was called the Algemene Begraafplaats Jaffa. The national monument protection is limited to the older, southern part of the cemetery.
Description
The nineteenth-century layout of the cemetery with straight and winding paths and a large circular plot with family graves is surrounded by a wide ditch and a dense green border. Centrally between the old layout and the later extension stands the hall from 1930. Through the application of geometric plots, the old layout of the cemetery, south of the hall, is very characteristic of the period. The great diversity of nineteenth and early twentieth-century single and family graves, executed in various types of natural stone, bronze, zinc, iron and marble, as well as the variety of deciduous and coniferous trees and shrubs contribute to the special character of the cemetery. Most graves are characteristic of the period from which they date. Therefore, there are graves with simple standing or reclining headstones with only a text, as well as stones with reliefs, sculpture in natural stone and bronze and grave markers in the form of grave vases, truncated columns, tombs, urns, obelisks etc. on the cemetery. The protected part of the cemetery lies to the south (right) of the hall, is roughly rectangular with a bulge at the corner of Mekelweg-Christiaan Huygensweg and lies roughly between the graves of Rodenburg (by the hall), the Sinke family (II-G, north-east corner), the Fröhlich family (south-east corner) and from there to the south-west corner Mekelweg-Christiaan Huygensweg, connected in straight lines.
Valuation
The cemetery is of general importance because of its cultural-historical, urban planning and architectural-historical value.
The cemetery has cultural-historical value because both the layout and the great diversity of graves provide a good picture of the development of grave culture in the Netherlands in the second half of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century. As such, the cemetery is representative of the history of burial in the Netherlands in the relevant period.
The cemetery has urban planning significance because of the specific layout in the urban area. Furthermore, there is ensemble value because of the visual and functional coherence with the director's residence.
The cemetery has architectural-historical value because of the special layout and because of the design, detailing and use of materials of a large number of graves.
The cemetery is also of importance because of its recognizability and the great degree of integrity.
