Inleiding

Waardering

- uitdrukking van een functie en als functioneel onderdeel van het complex Werktuigbouwkunde van de Technische Universiteit;

Introduction

CHIMNEY belonging to the Werktuigbouwkunde complex. Connected via a bricked stoking flue to the coal house adjoining the boiler house, the chimney forms part of the mechanical engineering laboratory of the Delft University of Technology for the Department of Mechanical and Shipbuilding Engineering, which was built from 1905-1911 in the style of early Neo-Dutch Renaissance according to a design by J.A.W. Vrijman, State Architect for educational buildings. One of the three halls of the former laboratory was in use as a boiler house, where steam was produced for driving the steam engines, which were installed in the largest hall. To the southwest of the boiler house is the chimney.

Description

The chimney is constructed of brick (English bond) from a square base. Corner blocks, 'capitals', bands and mouldings are executed in artificial stone.

At the base there is an iron hatch, which provides access to the chimney for maintenance work. Above the base, which is finished with projecting, natural stone mouldings, the plinth steps back towards a tall, round shaft. This stepping back occurs in three parts, with each featuring strong, horizontal mouldings emphasising the different parts. On the corners strong pilasters are applied, which likewise with mouldings and 'capitals' accentuate the plinth. The first member is octagonal with strong pilasters on the corners. The two parts above are round with again corner pilasters. The shaft is rhythmically articulated with bands applied at regular intervals. The soberly detailed top is lightly projecting.

Valuation

The free-standing chimney of the mechanical engineering laboratory is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value as

- an expression of a function and as a functional component of the Werktuigbouwkunde complex of the Delft University of Technology;

- because of the main form, the use of material and the detailing and the high degree of integrity thereof.

The chimney has urban planning value because of its prominent location on the Ezelsveldlaan and the spatial-functional and visual relationship with the surrounding buildings, both of Werktuigbouwkunde and the other, former buildings of the Delft University of Technology.
