Inleiding
Bij de historische buitenplaats Raaphorst behorende DIENSTWONING is in Eclectische stijl in het midden van de 19de eeuw gebouwd ter vervanging van een bestaand exemplaar, in de periode waarin H.H.A. Wentzel en C.E.A. Petzold in opdracht van prins Frederik werkten aan de reorganisatie van zijn buitenplaatsen, waaronder De Horsten. De dienstwoning heeft gefungeerd als portierswoning van Raaphorst en is met de voorgevel gericht naar de Rijksstraatweg. Het gebouw maakt deel uit van de Umfahrungsweg, die langs de diverse onderdelen van de buitenplaats gaat. Qua architectuur vertoont de dienstwoning overeenkomst met andere (voormalige) gebouwen op het landgoed van de prins, zowel op de Horsten, als de Paauw en Backershagen, op basis waarvan het ontwerp wordt toegeschreven aan H.H.A. Wentzel. Evenals Rijksstraatweg 440 en 422 waren de windveren en gootlijsten uitgevoerd met snijwerk en bevond zich tegen de noordoostelijke kopgevel een pergola. Tegen beide kopgevels was een balkon geplaatst. Hiervan resteren de poeren. Ook een luidklokje is niet meer aanwezig. Mogelijk waren de gevels, evenals bij Raaphorst 1, oorspronkelijk zandsteenkleurig gesausd. Ten zuiden van de dienstwoning heeft een uit dezelfde periode stammende schuur/boerderij gestaan. Ten zuidwesten ervan bevindt zich, ter plaatse van een kleine heuvel de restanten van een ijskelder.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaande, éénlaagse, in hoofdzaak symmetrisch opgezette, bouwmassa met kelder op rechthoekige plattegrond, wordt gedekt door een overstekend zadeldak met steekkap, voorzien van geglazuurde, gesmoorde Hollandse pannen met zinken nokvorsten. De nokrichting loopt noordoost/zuidwest. De vrij sober vormgegeven windveren zijn van hout. Op de nok bevindt zich een witgepleisterde schoorsteen. De wit geschilderde, gepleisterde gevels hebben een zwart geschilderde plint. Geblokte hoeklisenen dragen een over alle gevels doorlopende cordonlijst. De vensters op de begane grond zijn overwegend zesruits schuiframen, deels voorzien van binnenluiken. De naar de Rijksstraatweg gerichte voorgevel (noordwest) heeft een middelrisaliet onder een puntgevel, waar zich de entree bevindt, toegankelijk via twee stoeptreden. Dit is een paneeldeur met tweeruits bovenlicht, waarvoor nadien een houten tochtportaal is geplaatst, dat voor de bescherming van ondergeschikt belang is. Op de verdieping bevindt zich een rondboogvormig venster met Neogotische tracering. In de flankerende langsgevel bevindt zich elk één venster. De achtergevel (zuidoost) is een langsgevel met aan weerszijden één venster. Van de beide symmetrisch ingedeelde, als puntgevel uitgevoerde, kopgevels heeft de zuidwestelijke op de begane grond twee vensters en heeft de noordoostelijke links in de gevel een keldervenster. Tegen laatstgenoemde kopgevel was oorspronkelijke een pergola geplaatst, waarvan de fundamenten nog zichtbaar zijn. Ook zijn de aanzetten van het balkon nog herkenbaar. Beide kopgevels hebben op de verdieping een engelenraam met een houten geprofileerde afdekking. Het bovenlicht boven het middenraam heeft een Neogotische tracering.
Inwendig is de oorspronkelijke indeling met onderkelderde opkamer in hoofdlijnen gehandhaafd met onder meer stuc- en balkenplafonds en schoorsteenboezems.
Waardering
De DIENSTWONING op Raaphorst is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur-, cultuurhistorische en ensemblewaarde:
- als goed voorbeeld van dienstwoning uit het midden van de 19de eeuw in Eclectische stijl;
- als onderdeel van de historische buitenplaats De Horsten in het algemeen en Raaphorst in het bijzonder;

The SERVANT'S DWELLING belonging to the historic country estate Raaphorst was built in the Eclectic style in the middle of the 19th century to replace an existing building, in the period when H.H.A. Wentzel and C.E.A. Petzold were working on behalf of Prince Frederik on the reorganisation of his country estates, including De Horsten. The servant's dwelling functioned as a gate lodge of Raaphorst and is oriented with its front facade towards the Rijksstraatweg. The building forms part of the Umfahrungsweg, which runs along the various components of the country estate. In terms of architecture, the servant's dwelling shows similarity with other (former) buildings on the prince's estate, both at De Horsten, as well as De Paauw and Backershagen, on the basis of which the design is attributed to H.H.A. Detached, single-storey building, arranged largely symmetrically, on a rectangular footprint, covered by a projecting gabled roof with a coped gable, provided with glazed, burrished Dutch tiles with zinc ridge cresting. The ridge runs northeast/southwest. The fairly soberly designed weathervanes are of wood. A whitewashed chimney is located on the ridge. The whitewashed, plastered facades have a black-painted plinth. Blocked corner pilasters carry a cornice line running across all facades. The windows on the ground floor are predominantly six-paned sash windows, some equipped with interior shutters. The front facade (northwest) facing the Rijksstraatweg has a central risalit under a pointed gable, where the entrance is located, accessible via two steps. This is a panelled door with two-paned fanlight, in front of which a wooden draught porch has subsequently been placed, which is of subordinate importance for protection. On the upper storey is a semicircular window with Neo-Gothic tracery. In the flanking side facade is one window each. The rear facade (southeast) is a side facade with one window on either side. Of both symmetrically arranged gable ends executed as pointed gables, the southwestern one has two windows on the ground floor and the northeastern one has a cellar window on the left in the facade. Against the latter gable end a pergola was originally placed, of which the foundations are still visible. The supports of the balcony are also recognizable. Both gable ends have on the upper storey an oculus window with a wooden moulded covering. The fanlight above the central window has Neo-Gothic tracery.
Internally, the original layout with an undercellared upper chamber is maintained in its main lines, with amongst other things stucco and beam ceilings and chimney breasts.
