Inleiding
BOTENHUIS, ANNEX UITKIJKPOST in een Eclectische, aan de neo-Gotiek verwante stijl is waarschijnlijk omstreeks 1855 ontworpen door H.H.A. Wentzel. De bouwstijl sluit aan bij de overige door hem als huisarchitect ontworpen gebouwen en objecten op de landgoederen van prins Frederik (vgl. het toegangshek van De Hertenkamp). In de inventaris van Z.K.H. prins Frederik worden een aantal boten genoemd, die lagen aangemeerd in de grote vijver van Raaphorst. Het botenhuis kreeg vooral bekendheid doordat het bordes een geliefde plaats was van Z.K.H. koningin Wilhelmina om te schilderen.
Het botenhuis bevindt zich aan de zuidzijde van de grote waterpartij, ten noordwesten van het schiethuis. Het is gebouwd ter vervanging van een exemplaar dat aan de gracht langs Raaphorst was gelegen en in 1898 is gesloopt.
Omschrijving
Uit grauwe, fijngevoegde baksteen (kruisverband) opgetrokken overkluizing, geflankeerd door trappen, die leiden naar een bordes, vanwaar men een panoramisch uitzicht heeft over de grote vijver van het park. De traptreden zijn van hardsteen, evenals de dekplaten van de pijlers. De aan de waterzijde gesitueerde, symmetrisch ingedeelde keermuur met in het midden een kleine rondboogvormige opening wordt afgesloten door twee risalerende pijlers. Aan de noordzijde bevindt zich, geflankeerd door pijlers, een grote getoogde opening. De in totaal drie pijlers hebben aan de bovenzijde een uitkragend gemetseld veld met spitsboogvormige nis, afgedekt door een tandlijst. Op de hardstenen overstekende dekplaat, zijn balusters geplaatst van het bordeshek. De balusters, op vierkant grondvlak, zijn bekroond met diamantkopvormige kussens. De ijzeren stangen tussen de pilasters zijn versierd met enig krulwerk.
Waardering
Het botenhuis is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuurhistorische-, cultuurhistorische- en ensemblewaarde:
- als onderdeel van de historische buitenplaats De Horsten in het algemeen en Raaphorst in het bijzonder;
- als karakteristiek voorbeeld van een in een Eclectische, aan Neogotiek verwante stijl, vormgegeven botenhuis annex uitkijkpost die omstreeks 1860 ontworpen is door de Duite architect H.H.A. Wentzel. Het sluit qua stijl aan op de overige, door hem ontworpen gebouwen en objecten op de landgoederen van prins Frederik, bij wie hij in dienst was als huisarchitect;

BOATHOUSE, ANNEX LOOKOUT POST in an Eclectic style, related to Neo-Gothic, was probably designed around 1855 by H.H.A. Wentzel. The building style connects with the other buildings and objects designed by him as house architect on the estates of Prince Frederik (compare the entrance gate of De Hertenkamp). In the inventory of H.R.H. Prince Frederik, a number of boats are mentioned, which were moored in the large pond of Raaphorst. The boathouse became especially well-known because the platform was a favourite place for H.R.H. Queen Wilhelmina to paint.
The boathouse is located on the south side of the large water feature, to the northwest of the shooting lodge. It was built to replace an example that had been located on the canal alongside Raaphorst and was demolished in 1898.
Description
Arched covering constructed from grey, finely-jointed brickwork (Flemish bond), flanked by stairs, which lead to a platform, from which one has a panoramic view over the large pond of the park. The stair treads are of hardstone, as are the covering plates of the piers. The retaining wall situated on the water side, symmetrically arranged, with in the centre a small round-arched opening, is closed off by two projecting piers. On the north side, flanked by piers, is a large arched opening. The three piers in total have at the top a projecting brickwork field with pointed-arch-shaped niche, covered by a dentil moulding. On the hardstone overhanging covering plate, balusters of the platform balustrade are placed. The balusters, on square ground plan, are crowned with diamond-shaped cushions. The iron rods between the pilasters are decorated with some ornamental scrollwork.
Valuation
The boathouse is of general importance because of its architectural-historical, cultural-historical and ensemble value:
- as part of the historic country estate De Horsten in general and Raaphorst in particular;
- as a characteristic example of a boathouse annex lookout post designed in an Eclectic style, related to Neo-Gothic, which was designed around 1860 by the German architect H.H.A. Wentzel. It matches in style with the other buildings and objects designed by him on the estates of Prince Frederik, with whom he was employed as house architect;
