Inleiding
SCHIETHUIS met SCHIETDOEL, behorende tot de buitenplaats Raaphorst staat op een open weide ten zuidoosten van de grote waterpartij. Beide objecten zijn gebouwd in 1860-1861 in Engelse Tudor-gotiek stijl naar ontwerp van de Duitse architect H.H.A. Wentzel, huisarchitect van Z.K.H. prins Frederik der Nederlanden. In het huisje werden schietwedstrijden gehouden door de leden van het St. Hubertusgilde.
Omschrijving
Het vrijstaande bakstenen gebouwtje heeft een achthoekige hoofdvorm gevat in een lagere kruisvormige ombouw. Het hoofdvolume wordt gedekt door een rieten tentdak bekroond door een achthoekige lantaarn, de ombouw heeft een bedekking van imitatieleien. In het westelijk dakschild een schoorsteen met siermetselwerk waarop een in zinkwit geschilderde terracotta schoorsteenpijp, vormgegeven als een zuil met kantelen. Alle dakranden zijn voorzien van uitgesneden sierlijsten, die het decoratieve karakter van het gebouw bepalen. De ombouw bestaat uit drie rechthoekige, gelijkvormige aanbouwen tegen de zuid- (hoofdingang), noord- (opslag) en westgevel (keuken). De aanbouwen hebben een breed overstek en zijn onderling met elkaar verbonden door luifels. De deuren en vensters zijn voorzien van traceringen in gotische stijl met drie- en veelpassen in de bovenlichten. De hoofdingang wordt gemarkeerd door een luifel gedragen door houten zuiltjes op een natuurstenen basement met rijk gesneden houten kapitelen. Tegen de oostgevel is een 9,5 m lange overkapping aangebouwd, die aan weerszijden door drie houten zuiltjes gesteund wordt. Tweederde deel is open en alleen afgewerkt middels een laag, rijk bewerkt hekje. Het uiteinde, dat gemarkeerd wordt door een uit het met riet gedekte zadeldak met gesmoorde nokvorst omhoog komend tentdak, is bekroond door een pinakel en wordt aan twee kanten door glas (roeden) afgesloten. Vanaf dit punt werd geschoten op een zich op ca. 90 m afstand bevindend SCHIETDOEL. Het doel kon bewegen, gezien de rails op de grond. Het bakstenen bouwwerkje is gedecoreerd met een uitkragende rand in metselwerk en een geometrisch patroon in een afwijkende kleur baksteen.
Waardering
Het schiethuis met schietdoel, behorend bij de buitenplaats Raaphorst, is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een schiethuis met schietdoel uit het derde kwart van de 19de eeuw in Engelse Tudor-gotiek stijl. SHOOTING BOX with SHOOTING TARGET, belonging to the country estate Raaphorst stands on an open meadow to the southeast of the large water feature. Both objects were built in 1860-1861 in English Tudor-Gothic style designed by the German architect H.H.A. Wentzel, house architect of H.R.H. Prince Frederick of the Netherlands. In the small building shooting competitions were held by members of the St. Hubertus Guild.
Description
The detached brick building has an octagonal main form set within a lower cruciform extension. The main volume is covered by a thatched tent roof crowned by an octagonal lantern, the extension is covered with imitation slate. In the western roof slope a chimney with decorative brickwork topped by a terracotta chimney pipe painted in zinc white, designed as a column with crenellations. All roof edges are provided with carved decorative mouldings, which determine the decorative character of the building. The extension consists of three rectangular, similar outbuildings against the south (main entrance), north (storage) and west facade (kitchen). The outbuildings have a broad overhang and are interconnected by canopies. The doors and windows are provided with tracery in Gothic style with trefoils and multifoils in the fanlights. The main entrance is marked by a canopy supported by wooden columns on a natural stone basement with richly carved wooden capitals. Against the eastern facade a 9.5 m long canopy is attached, supported on both sides by three wooden columns. Two-thirds is open and only finished by means of a low, richly worked fence. The end, marked by a tent roof rising from the thatched gabled roof with hipped ridge, is crowned by a pinnacle and is closed on two sides by glass (glazing bars). From this point shooting took place on a SHOOTING TARGET located at approximately 90 m distance. The target could move, given the rails on the ground. The brick structure is decorated with a projecting edge in brickwork and a geometric pattern in a contrasting colour brick.
