Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In 1887 a round WATER TOWER was completed, built in eclectic style with adjoining engine and boiler houses, constructed in stylistic forms considered appropriate in the nineteenth century for the 'Chateau d'eau'. The concession for water extraction was granted in 1885. The design is by N. Biezeveld. The water tower forms part of the complex of the Westland drinking water pipeline.
Description
Built on a circular ground plan, a symmetrical 38 metre high water tower divided by drip mouldings into four segments, the uppermost of which has timber cladding, under a cone-shaped roof covered with copper. On the north side two adjoining outbuildings built parallel to each other. The tower is built in cross-bond masonry and has three-stage buttresses extending through to the second segment, resting on natural stone capping plates with drip edges. The lowest stage adjoins the drip moulding, with the same profile as the drip moulding of the first segment. The uppermost stage also has that profile, while the middle one has a simple sloping finish. In the lower layer a cement-rendered profiled plinth and three set-back new glazed doors with two lights under mortared round arches with natural stone voussoirs with diamond heads. Three hardstone steps lead to the doors. In the segment above four round-arch windows on the axis of the doors and with the natural stone sill mouldings at the same height as the capping plate of the second buttress stage. Above the main entrance a natural stone escutcheon with a black bar on a white field. The door to the adjoining buildings is still original. The drip moulding of the second segment has the same profile as the drip moulding of the first segment. The third segment has narrow round-arch windows, likewise positioned in the vertical axis, with the sill at the same height as the drip moulding of the second segment. The drip moulding of the third segment has the same profile as the drip moulding of the first segment. In the fourth segment round windows, in contrast to the iron ornamental wall anchors, not positioned in the vertical longitudinal axis. The timber cladding consists of pieces terminating in a triangular point with a round hole and an arrow cut out within, and overhanging rebated battens. The projecting roof with roof crest iron has four roof dormers with four-pane hipped-roof windows under cranked, corniced gables and cresting irons on the half-hipped ends. The projecting gutter moulding on corbels has a hanging sculpted edge. To the cladding is hung a timber extension, referring to medieval building style, a type of corbelled-out projection, which extends down to the drip moulding.
The single-storey extension consists of three adjoining long and short sections (boiler and engine houses), the longest of which has a hipped roof covered with dampened improved Dutch tiles, containing four bays, each with a twelve-pane cross window, the middle pane of which opens, in a recessed spandrel. Heavy bar wall anchors above the wall piers run through over the timber gutter moulding. The gable end on the east has two basket-arch-shaped spandrels with a nine-pane window respectively a new door under a two-pane recessed fanlight. Between the spandrels a diamond-shaped four-pane window. The projecting spout gable is covered with struck wall plates. Cross-bond masonry and wrought-iron ornamental wall anchors. The rear facade is the same but has sixteen-pane sash windows in the spandrels under mortared arches. In the corner with the shorter extension a window with sill under a recessed lintel. This shorter and lower extension, which provides access to the water tower, is equal in roof and gable arrangement to the longer extension but has a third bay under a flat roof. Around the entire extension runs a rendered plinth with pierced spandrels. In front of the short extension is a round water well.
Interior
In the water tower there is still the original cast-iron spiral staircase to the storey, tile tableaux from 1922 and an installation from the first half of the twentieth century. On the ground floor two fluted, braced cast-iron Doric columns on octagonal bases.
Assessment
The water tower is of general importance for its cultural-historical value through its place in the history of regional utilities. It is also of general importance for its architectural-historical value, namely the quality of the design and the 'authentic' style in which the water tower is constructed, referring to the 'Chateau d'Eau'. Furthermore, it has ensemble value because of the spatial and functional relationship maintained with the other complex components. The water tower is of landmark value as a characteristic element on the Haagwe and is well preserved in its main form and the recognisability of its components.
