Inleiding.
Enigszins afgescheiden van de rest vinden we in de noordoosthoek van het terrein de begraafplaats van Coudewater, toegankelijk via een smeedijzeren vleugelhek tussen bakstenen pilaren. Pontificaal op de as van het middenpad twee achter elkaar gesitueerde GRAFMONUMENTEN van de stichters, waarin hun vrouwen later zijn bijgezet. Aan weerszijden voornamelijk zustersgraven. Het graf van Van den Bogaert vertoont invloeden van het Eclecticisme en stamt uit 1880; het graf van Pompe, een Neo-renaissancistisch ontwerp, dateert uit 1901. De witmarmeren plaquettes ter nagedachtenis aan hun echtgenotes zijn toegevoegd in respectievelijk 1899 en 1908. Dr. E. van den Bogaert en Dr. L. Pompe, voorheen verbonden aan het Geneeskundig Gesticht Reinier van Arkel in Den Bosch, waren de initiatiefnemers voor Coudewater en hebben de psychiatrische inrichting in 1870 gesticht.
Omschrijving.
Het graf van Van den Bogaert bestaat uit een lage, licht oplopende hardstenen graftombe op rechthoekig grondplan. Symmetrisch. Overstekende dekplaat, omrand met lijst met sierlijk gebeitelde florale motieven. Epitaaf: 'HULDE AAN DR. E.A.P. VAN DEN BOGAERT / STICHTER / EN / EERSTE GENEESHEER DIRECTEUR / DER / GENEESKUNDIGE INRICHTING / COUDEWATER (...)'.
Op het graf van Pompe staat een smal hardstenen grafmonument op een rechthoekige plattegrond. Het is symmetrisch en frontaal gericht en rijst hoog op waarbij het door versnijdingen en verjongingen steeds smaller wordt. Bekroning met ezelsrug. Plaquette met epitaaf aan de voorzijde: 'DR. L. TH. POMPE / MEDE OPRICHTER / VAN HET GESTICHT / COUDEWATER (...)', bekroond met een guirlande en een kruisvorm waartussen florale decoraties.
Waardering.
Het tweetal grafmonumenten is van algemeen belang. Het bezit cultuurhistorische waarden als bijzondere uitdrukking van de herinneringscultus ter nagedachtenis aan de stichters van Coudewater; als bijzondere uitdrukking van de grafcultuur binnen de geestelijke gezondheidszorg; als uitdrukking van de rooms-katholieke emancipatie. Het bezit, tezamen met de rest van de begraafplaats en met de overige tot Coudewater behorende objecten, ensemblewaarden als essentieel onderdeel van een historisch gegroeid ensemble in de geestelijke gezondheidszorg.
Daarnaast vanwege de situering op een plek in de noordoostelijke hoek van het terrein, verbonden met de verdere uitleg van het complex en verder als markant onderdeel van de historische bebouwing aan de P. de Gorterstraat. Het is van belang wegens de gaafheid.
