Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
Near the Oude Berlicumseweg on a fairly rural-looking location south of the old main building, situated a former DIRECTOR'S RESIDENCE with surrounding ornamental garden and waterway. The detached building was constructed in 1882 in Chalet style as a dwelling for the then director of Coudewater.
The residence was later converted into a pavilion for patients ('De Wetering') and is now used as an office. Externally altered in some parts; internally modernised although the original layout has been largely preserved. The internally converted coach house falls outside the protection.
Description.
Partially cellared two-storey brick building with attic storey under a hipped roof with half-hipped roofs joining on the sides, all covered with pan tiles from Germany featuring trough pans and diamond patterns, with large overhang in Chalet style. Box gutters, roof overhangs with wind bracing and wooden post and rail work on decoratively carved wooden corbels. The ground plan describes a Greek cross with a three-storey stair tower in the corner between rear and left gable, serving as service staircase, under a tent roof with slate covering in Maas-bond pattern and overhang. In the corner between rear and right gable as well as at the right gable a recessed terrace on iron columns from the nineteen-sixties. The brickwork laid in English bond is enlivened by the decorative use of different coloured bricks in, among others, the gable ends, further by stretcher courses and dentil courses. Mostly simplified, often T-shaped sash windows, straight-headed below decorative arches or round arches. Further round-arched windows in the gable ends and various oculi in the side gables. Windows largely with ashlar sills. Front gable of five bays as the only one with two joining gabled roofs, one gabled roof at the remaining gables. Central bay with internal entrance with single-glazed panelled door fitted with ornamental wrought-iron grille and loggia above, both framed by round arches on corbelled brickwork. Left gable, with partly coupled windows, detailed accordingly. The same applies to the rear and right gable with a recently substantially altered base.
Of the interior, with centrally located hall and staircase situated against the left gable, the following are noteworthy: original cellar with barrel vault and storage compartments; hall with marble floor; stair with balusters; original attic storey with wooden roof trusses.
Valuation.
The former director's residence is of general importance. The object possesses cultural-historical values as a distinctive expression of developments within mental healthcare in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with regard to function, appearance and business organisation. Furthermore, due to the significance of the residence with stair tower for the typological development of the mansion.
The object possesses architectural-historical values due to the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design and the distinctive ornamentation in particular in the roof structures. The object possesses ensemble values as an essential component of a historically developed psychiatric complex. Furthermore, due to its location on the Coudewater site itself in the immediate vicinity of the other objects and as a distinctive part of the historic development along the Berlicumseweg.
The object is of significance due to the integrity of the architectural main form and elements of the interior and the preserved original layout in a landscape setting with adjoining coach house. Finally, due to the very rare German roof tiles in the Netherlands.
