Inleiding
Vrijstaande villa gebouwd in 1909 naar een ontwerp van architect Henri Seelen. Opdrachtgever was dhr. L. Rieter. De villa heette oorspronkelijk Villa Paulina. Een van volgende eigenaren bedacht de naam Villa Kakelhof. Omstreeks 1953 werden enkele verbouwingen doorgevoerd: in het souterrain kwam een nieuwe betonvloer; enkele plafonds werden verlaagd; in de linkerzijgevel werd een venster dichtgezet; in de rechterzijgevel werd een venster toegevoegd; uit de vensters werden de bovenlichten verwijderd.
Omschrijving
Vrijstaande villa op een rechthoekig grondplan in twee bouwlagen met souterrainverdieping. De villa heeft een wolfdak met Tuiles du Nord. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is rode baksteen met gele speklagen; metselwerk in kruisverband. Segmentboogvormige houten vensters; rechthoekige erkervensters. Hardstenen dorpelstenen. Rechterdeel voorgevel springt vooruit en loopt uit in een topgevel met een houten kap op consoles. Houten kap met elementen Chaletstijl; kap bekroond met nokpion. Het vooruitspringend geveldeel is in de eerste bouwlaag voorzien van een vierkante erker met schilddak. De plint van de erker en het souterraingedeelte zijn bekleed met natuursteen. Het topgevelvenster heeft een rondboogvormig bovenlicht. Dit topgevelvenster heeft aan de benedenzijde een gevelvlak met de naam KAKELHOF en decoratief metselwerk. Terugliggend deel van de voorgevel met hoge geprofileerde plint en keldervensters in een gedeeltelijk hardstenen vensterlijst met een segmentboog. Dakgoot op houten consoles. In het voorgeveldakvlak twee kleine dakkapellen met schilddakjes met pannen en nokpion. Middendeel van de rechterzijgevel springt iets vooruit. In dit geveldeel een dubbele deur met driedelig bovenlicht. Dit geveldeel is voorzien van een vooruitspringende dakgoot. Rechts van deze deur twee smalle vensters. Boven de deur in de tweede bouwlaag een venster. In de eerste bouwlaag werd omstreeks 1953 een venster toegevoegd. In de linkerzijgevel werd omstreeks 1953 in de eerste bouwlaag een venster dichtgezet. Een segmentboogvormig souterrainvenster. In het middendeel van de linkerzijgveel een geprofileerd schoorsteenkanaal. In de topgevel aan weerszijden van dit schoorsteenkanaal een klein venster. Het linkerdeel van de achtergevel springt vooruit en loopt uit in een topgevel. De topgevel heeft een houten kap met licht overstek op houten consoles en nokpion. De achtergevel heeft op het uitgebouwde souterrain een groot terras. Aan de rechterzijde is dit terras vijfzijdig en voorzien van een balustrade. In het middendeel van de achtergvel een toegangstrap met borstweringen en onderaan voorzien van een smeedijzeren hekje in Art Nouveau. De vensters en deuren van de souterrainverdieping zijn niet authentiek. De terraspui in de achtergevel van de woning is van omstreeks 1970. In de achtergevel een segmentboogvormige deur en venster. Boven de deur een driedelig trappenhuisvenster. In de topgevel een rondboogvormig venster en een rechthoekig venster met een rondboogvormig bovenlicht. In het dakvlak een kleine dakkapel met schilddakje met pannen en nokpion. Van het INTERIEUR is onder meer het volgende van belang. De structuur van het interieur is vrijwel in tact. De vestibule beschikt over de authentieke marmeren vloerplaten, marmeren lambriseringen en stucwerk op het plafond in florale Art Nouveau-stijl. De authentieke eikenhouten trap heeft een bijzondere detaillering met -eveneens- florale Art Nouveau-motieven. In het trappenhuis, halverwege de begane grond en eerste verdieping, bevindt zich een drieruits glas-in-loodvenster met zonnebloemmotieven. De vestibule geeft toegang tot de warande, de zitkamer en de salon. De vloer van de zitkamer en van de salon zijn uitgevoerd in parket. Beide, aan elkaar grenzende vertrekken, hebben op het plafond een sierrand van Art Nouveau-stucwerk. De zitkamer heeft een zwartmarmeren schouw met stookplaats van zwart-witte geblokte marmeren tegels. De warande (eetkamer) heeft een stucwerkrozet en een bijzondere Art Nouveau tegelvloer in geelrode en blauwgroene kleurstelling en palmetmotieven. Het souterrain beschikt over de originele zwart-wit geblokte plavuizen. Een vertrek aan de voorzijde van souterrain heeft een zwart-witte plavuizenvloer met eenvoudige florale motieven. Op de verdieping zijn de paneeldeuren behouden.
Waardering
De vrijstaande villa is van algemeen belang. Het object heeft cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een sociaal-economische ontwikkeling, namelijk de stedelijke expansie aan het eind van de 19de eeuw in het algemeen en het ontstaan van villaparken in het bijzonder. Het is van belang als bijzondere uitdrukking van een technische, typologische en geografische ontwikkeling. Het object heeft architectuurhistorische waarden vanwege de esthetische kwaliteiten van het architectonisch ontwerp in combinatie met enkele opmerkelijke details: de houten hoefijzervormige kroonlijst, de verfijnde detailleringen en de diverse bewaard gebleven elementen in het interieur. The right part of the front facade projects forward and terminates in a gable with a wooden roof truss on consoles. Wooden roof truss with Chalet-style elements; roof crowned with a ridge ornament. The projecting facade section is provided on the first storey with a square bay window with a hipped roof. The plinth of the bay window and the basement section are clad with natural stone. The gable window has a rounded arched fanlight. This gable window has on the lower side a facade surface with the name KAKELHOF and decorative brickwork. Recessed section of the front facade with a high moulded plinth and basement windows in a partially hard stone window frame with a segmental arch. Roof gutter on wooden consoles. The gable has a wooden roof truss with slight overhang on wooden consoles and a ridge ornament. The rear facade has on the built-out basement a large terrace. On the right side this terrace is five-sided and provided with a balustrade. In the middle section of the rear facade an access stair with railings and provided at the bottom with a wrought-iron gate in Art Nouveau style. The windows and doors of the basement storey are not authentic. The terrace bay window in the rear facade of the house is from around 1970. In the rear facade a segmental arched door and window. Above the door a three-part stairwell window. In the gable a rounded arched window and a rectangular window with a rounded arched fanlight. In the roof surface a small roof dormer with a small hipped roof with tiles and ridge ornament. Of the INTERIOR the following is among matters of importance. The structure of the interior is virtually intact. The vestibule is equipped with authentic marble floor tiles, marble wall coverings and stucco work on the ceiling in floral Art Nouveau style. The authentic oak staircase has special detailing with likewise floral Art Nouveau motifs. In the stairwell, halfway between the ground floor and first storey, there is a three-pane leaded glass window with sunflower motifs. The vestibule gives access to the dining area, the sitting room and the salon. The floors of the sitting room and of the salon are laid in parquet. Both, adjacent rooms, have on the ceiling a decorative border of Art Nouveau stucco work. The sitting room has a black marble fireplace with firebox of black and white checked marble tiles. The dining area has stucco work rosette and a particular Art Nouveau tile floor in yellow-red and blue-green colouring and palmette motifs. The basement is equipped with original black and white checked floor tiles. A room on the front side of the basement has a black and white checked floor with simple floral motifs. On the storey the panelled doors have been preserved.
Valuation
The detached villa is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic development, namely urban expansion at the end of the 19th century in general and the emergence of villa parks in particular. It is of importance as a particular expression of a technical, typological and geographical development. The object has architectural-historical values on account of the aesthetic qualities of the architectural design in combination with some remarkable details: the wooden horseshoe-shaped cornice, the refined detailing and the various preserved elements in the interior. It is also of particular importance in the oeuvre of Henri Seelen. It has ensemble value as a characteristic part of the villa park, among other historical villas with associated park layout.
