Inleiding
Omstreeks 1914 gebouwd voormalig wachtgebouw thans hoofdgebouw (A) van de Frederik Hendrik Kazerne te Blerick. Het gebouw is aan de zuidoostzijde links van de ingang van het kazerneterrein gesitueerd. De toegepaste bouwstijl is het Traditionalisme met elementen uit Willem II-gotiek. Omstreeks 1970 werd het gebouw gerenoveerd.
Omschrijving
Langwerpig rechthoekig voormalig wachtgebouw van de Frederik Hendrik Kazerne. Het gebouw telt twee bouwlagen plus dakverdieping. Het gebouw heeft een zadeldak met Hollandse pannen, in de voor- en achtergevel drie topgevels met een zadeldak met wolfseinde. Het toegepaste bouwmateriaal is baksteen en hardsteen. Rechthoekige vensters deels met stalen kozijnen deels met houten kozijnen met roedeverdeling. Vensters met hardstenen dorpels en lateien. De voorgevel van het gebouw aan de straatzijde is symmetrisch ingedeeld. Het middendeel springt vanaf de tweede bouwlaag terug. In de eerste bouwlaag in het midden het ingangsportiek met een rondboogvormige toegang in hardsteen. Portiekvloer en deur zijn vernieuwd. Aan de bovenzijde van de rondboog een plaat hardsteen met daarop de naam Frederik Hendrik Kazerne. In de eerste bouwlaag over de gehele gevelbreedte de plint afgezet met een band hardsteen. Aan weerszijden van het portiek twee hoge rechthoekige ramen met zesruits roedeverdeling. Aan de linker- en rechterzijde van deze hoge ramen zeven kleine raampjes. Op het vooruitspringende middendeel van de voorgevel een balkon met balustrade met bakstenen borstwering en zes hardstenen kanteelachtige kolommen. Het rechter- en linkerdeel van de voorgevel uitlopend in een topgevel met in de tweede bouwlaag twee maal twee rechthoekige vensters en in de topgevel drie kleinere vensters. In de tweede bouwlaag van het terugliggende middendeel tien hoge rechthoekige vensters. Het middendeel loopt uit in een topgevel met hierin twee maal twee rechthoekige vensters. In de rechterzijgevel een vernieuwde entreepui. Het venster bij de receptie is eveneens vernieuwd. In het middendeel van de linkerzijgevel in de eerste bouwlaag een deur met hierboven in de tweede bouwlaag een balkondeur met een brandtrap van omstreeks 1970. Deze deur in de tweede bouwlaag was oorspronkelijk een venster. Links en rechts van de deur in de eerste bouwlaag en van de balkondeur in de tweede bouwlaag twee vensters. Vrijwel symmetrische indeling achtergevel. Plint afgezet met een band hardsteen. Het middendeel en het linker-en rechtergeveldeel lopen uit in een topgevel. Het rechtergeveldeel springt iets vooruit en is iets smaller dan het linkergeveldeel. Het rechtergeveldeel telt in de eerste bouwlaag vier vensters, het linkergeveldeel telt in de eerste bouwlaag zes vensters. De entree in het middengeveldeel is omstreeks 1970 vernieuwd. Aan weerszijden van de entree in de eerste bouwlaag vier vensters met stalen kozijnen en zesruits roedeverdeling. Aan de bovenzijde van de entree twee maal twee trappenhuisvensters. In de middentopgevel twee kleine vensters en aan weerszijden een hoog venster. In de tweede bouwlaag van de achtergevel hoge vensters en twee maal twee kleine vensters. In de topgevels links en rechts drie kleine rechthoekige vensters. In het dakvlak twee dakkapellen. De structuur van het interieur is grotendeels in tact. De uitmonstering is omstreeks 1970 grotendeels gerenoveerd.
In het verlengde van de ingangspoort vooraan op het excercitieterrein staat het monument ter herinnering aan het vroegere Fort Sint Michiel bestaande uit enkele restanten van de vroegere vestingwerken in baksteen en hardsteen.
Waardering
Het voormalig wachtgebouw van de Frederik Hendrik Kazerne bezit cultuurhistorische waarde vanwege het belang voor de militaire geschiedenis van Nederland. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door het belang van het gebouw voor de typologische ontwikkeling binnen de architectuur van militaire gebouwen. Het gebouw bezit ensemblewaarden als onderdeel van het kazernecomplex en door de markante en beeldbepalende situering in dit deel van Venlo. The building has a gabled roof with Dutch tiles, and in the front and rear facades three stepped gables with gabled roofs with half-hipped ends. The building materials used are brick and hardstone. Rectangular windows, some with steel frames and some with wooden frames with glazing bars. Windows with hardstone sills and lintels. The front facade of the building on the street side is symmetrically arranged. The central section recesses from the second storey.
