Inleiding
Familiegraf J. Kurstjens, 1939. Opgericht in opdracht van de gelijknamige familie, welke bekend is als fabrikantenfamilie in de keramische industrie van Tegelen. Het graf is gesitueerd nabij het centrale pleintje in de aanleg van de begraafplaats aan de Kerkhoflaan.
Omschrijving
Het familiegraf Kurstjens heeft een in hoofdvorm trapeziumvormige plattegrond. Ombouw met een trapsgewijs oplopende en door een kruis bekroonde achterwand, geheel uitgevoerd in rood-geel genuanceerde baksteen van groot formaat. Metselwerk in kettingverband. Centraal aan de voorzijde een dubbel hekwerkje tussen twee kleine pijlers, voorzien van de tekst "requiescant in pace". Eveneens aan de voorzijde twee bakstenen hoekpijlers. Al deze pijlers hebben een keramische bekroning, voorzien van een kruismotief. De bakstenen ombouw, die ten dele is vernieuwd, heeft ten dele nog de zeer decoratieve keramische bovenafdekking. De bakstenen hoekpijlers aan de achterzijde hebben geprofileerde, rode keramische kruismotieven. In de ruimte binnen de bakstenen ombouw zijn de herdenkingsplaquettes van tal van bijgezette overledenen geplaatst.
Het aanzien van het graf wordt in hoge mate gedomineerd door de rode, figuratieve keramische reliëfs. Deze reliëfs betreffen een hoog verheven, op een troon zetelende aartsengel met grote vleugels, die met beide handen een gietijzeren schalmei draagt. Aan de voeten van deze aartsengel aan weerszijden een reliëf van in doeken gehulde gedaanten: hoogstwaarschijnlijk - de echtelieden Kurstjens-Cuypers. Onder beide gedaanten een tekstreliëf: "op den laatsten dag zal ik uit mijn graf verrijzen". De bakstenen sokkel, waarop het reliëf van de aartsengel is aangebracht, heeft een rood keramisch reliëf, voorzien van het opschrift "Jos. Kurstjens. Echtgen van Hendr. Cuypers. *14-4-1880 + 10-1-1939 Tegelen". Hieronder in rode keramische letters: "Rustplaats Fam. Jos. Kurstjens". Op het muurwerk van de trapsgewijs opgemetselde achterwand zijn rode keramische levensvlammen geplaatst. Aan weerszijden van de sokkel trapsgewijs uitgemetselde bloembakken.
Waardering
Het familiegraf Kurstjens is van cultuurhistorische waarde en vertegenwoordigt algemeen belang als bijzondere funeraire uiting van het belang en de betrokkenheid van de familie Kurstjens bij de sociaal-economische ontwikkeling van Limburgse Maasvallei vanaf het derde kwart van de negentiende eeuw. De familie Kurstjens is de grondlegger van een aanzienlijke keramische industrie, die vanwege de specifieke bodemgesteldheid verbonden is met Tegelen. Description
The Kurstjens family grave has a trapezoidal ground plan in its principal form. Enclosure with a stepped rising rear wall crowned by a cross, executed entirely in red-yellow nuanced brickwork of large format. Brickwork in chain bond. At the centre of the front a double wrought-iron gate between two small pillars, inscribed with the text "requiescant in pace". Likewise at the front two brick corner pillars. All these pillars have ceramic crowning, furnished with a cross motif. The brick enclosure, which has been partly renewed, retains in part the highly decorative ceramic top capping. The brick corner pillars at the rear have profiled red ceramic cross motifs. Within the space enclosed by the brick boundary are placed the memorial plaques of numerous deceased persons interred.
The appearance of the grave is dominated to a high degree by the red figurative ceramic reliefs. These reliefs depict a high relief, enthroned archangel with large wings, who carries a cast-iron bagpipe in both hands. At the feet of this archangel on either side a relief of robed figures: most likely the spouses Kurstjens-Cuypers. Below both figures a text relief: "on the last day I shall rise from my grave". The brick plinth, on which the relief of the archangel is mounted, has a red ceramic relief inscribed with "Jos. Kurstjens. Husband of Hendr. Cuypers. *14-4-1880 + 10-1-1939 Tegelen". Below in red ceramic lettering: "Resting place Fam. Jos. Kurstjens". On the masonry of the stepped rising rear wall are placed red ceramic life flames. On either side of the plinth stepped brick flower boxes.

The Kurstjens family grave is of cultural-historical value and represents general interest as a remarkable funerary expression of the importance and involvement of the Kurstjens family in the socio-economic development of the Limburgse Maasvallei from the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The Kurstjens family is the founder of a considerable ceramic industry, which because of the specific soil conditions is associated with Tegelen. The architectural-historical values of the family grave are considerable because of the material application evidently connected with the ceramic industry and the characteristic design. The situation of the family grave near the central square of the cemetery, in the vicinity of a number of other manufacturer graves, underscores the importance of this object. The Kurstjens family grave is in reasonably good condition. Finally, in this form of funerary heritage there is a considerable typological rarity value.
