The main component of the country house complex 'De Boeckhorst' is formed by the RESIDENTIAL HOUSE of the country house type, built in 1913 in business expressionistic style according to a design by J.J.(Co) Brandes (1885-1955) on commission of P.J. van Ommeren. The building style of the country house is influenced by English and German country house construction but the facade treatment is expressionistic in the application of decorative ornamental brickwork and glazed relief tiles, executed by the then leading ceramicist Brouwer from Leiderdorp-Hazerswoude. Building of two storeys on rectangular floor plan under a composite hipped-gabled roof with slates in Maasdecking. Overhanging gutter line on simple corbels. The facades are built in red brick with jointing courses, ornamental blocks, lintels and drip mouldings of yellow sandstone and relief ornaments with animal figures (squirrels, owls and birds) in terracotta. These animals were found on the site prior to the construction of the house. Windows and double glazed doors under fanlights with stained glass windows in bright colours. The windows and doors are fitted with shutters. In the corner of the risalit on the right side facade (northeast) the entrance portico with round arches on decorated corbels of yellow sandstone. In the portico sandstone reliefs depicting an Aesculapius and three shields. The double varnished panel door has a three-part semicircular fanlight with stained glass. Above the portico a corner balcony with wooden column under lintel on natural stone decorated corbels. The front facade (southeast) at the street side is dominated by a tall rising facade section under catslide roof of which the gable top is filled with decorative brickwork and relief stones with squirrels, owls and birds. Ground floor a bay window with cut-off corners and above it a similar covered balcony with wooden columns and brick balustrade. Balcony doors. Three-part attic window with six-pane windows. On the left in the facade a double glazed door between equally large side lights, the first floor windows show the same three-part division. Against the left side facade (southwest) a loggia with granito floor and sandstone fluted columns with fantasy capitals under a balcony with bell-shaped ornament. Double glazed doors to loggia and balcony. To the right of the loggia a rectangular bay section with small windows under a balcony with brick balustrade. A double glazed door opens onto the balcony. On the rear facade (northwest) a tall rising facade section with bay window and balcony and richly ornamented gable top as on the front facade.

INTERIOR. The reasonably well-preserved interior contains among other things a draught lobby and a central hall with marble floor and wainscoting and double glazed doors to the rooms. The hall with wooden staircase is illuminated by a ceiling light with coloured stained glass window. The lower curved stair arm runs to the landing with curved high panel wainscoting and from there a straight flight of stairs goes to the first floor. On the first floor a void with round arches on sandstone columns with Oriental-seeming relief ornaments which are partly gilded.

Valuation

The country house 'De Boeckhorst' with associated interior is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural historical value:

- as an intact and representative example of an early 20th century country house with outbuildings, following the example of historical country estates, characteristic of the first phase in the development of Wassenaar into a villa village.
