The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 2: HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG.

Waardering

HISTORISCHE TUIN- EN PARKAANLEG is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege de ouderdom;

- vanwege de tuinhistorische geschiedenis verbonden aan de aanleg;

- als gaaf voorbeeld van een stinsterrein met bijbehorende omgrachting, lanen en stinzenflora;

- vanwege de bijzondere compositie van lanen, open ruimten, stateterrein met omgrachting in samenhang met de in landschappelijke stijl aangelegde parktuin, waarin oudere tuinelementen en stinzenflora;

- vanwege de aanwezigheid van monumentale solitairen en boomgroepen uit de tijd van de aanleg;

- als voorbeeld van de ontwikkeling van particulier tot openbaar toegankelijk terrein;

Description component 2: HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT.

The layout of Martenastate, partly bordered by open pastures, can be distinguished into three characteristic components: a. the moated former stinsterrein with house (homestead); b. adjacent to the east thereof a moated bastion-shaped site; c. the walking park to the north of this.

Re a. The virtually square stinsterrein probably dates from the Middle Ages and is completely moated. Parallel to the west moat, along the front of the site and the house, runs a straight avenue planted with linden trees. This avenue forms the connecting element between the church located to the west, the house, the two outbuildings and the landscape park. To the south of the homestead lie pastures, so that from the house open views of the surrounding landscape are obtained (and conversely from De Wier of the house).

Re b. The moated bastion-shaped site (pasture) adjoins on the south side to the east moat of the stinsterrein; on the north side to the meandering water feature; parallel to the north moat runs an old avenue with pollarded linden trees.

Re c. The current walking park comprises in particular elements of the 19th-century landscape style (meandering water features, paths, plantings and a small hill), elements from earlier periods (some old linden avenues, a chestnut avenue and an old beech hedge walk, paths, plantings and fencing from 1912 - when the layout was transformed into a publicly accessible walking park) and the results of the renovation of 1972 according to the ideas of garden 'artist' Louis G.L. Le Roy. The core of the circular walk is formed by the meandering water feature, which ends in an S-shaped pond edged with old trees. The paths around it offer varying views of the water feature. The layout is strongly inward-facing, with virtually no views of the surrounding pastures (one sight line from the east edge has been closed off). From the small hill on the east edge of the layout there is a view of the house. The bog in the northern section has been renewed. Also noteworthy is the particular stinzen flora (including adderwortel, Haarlems klokkenspel and yellow anemone) which may be connected to both the older stinsterrein and the possibly first half 19th-century landscape-style layout.

Appraisal

HISTORIC GARDEN AND PARK LAYOUT is of general importance:

- because of its age;

- because of the garden-historical significance associated with the layout;

- as a well-preserved example of a stinsterrein with associated moating, avenues and stinzen flora;

- because of the distinctive composition of avenues, open spaces, state site with moating in conjunction with the park garden laid out in landscape style, containing older garden elements and stinzen flora;

- because of the presence of monumental solitary trees and tree groups from the time of the layout;

- as an example of the development from private to publicly accessible site;

- because of the functional-spatial coherence with the other components of the country estate.
