Inleiding

Introduction

RESIDENTIAL BLOCK with 48 CORRIDOR FLATS and MAISONETTES, built in 1937 to a design in the New Functionalist style by architect W.Th. ten Bosch, within the Blijdorp Extension Plan of 1929-1931 by W.G. Witteveen. The strip of flats forms part of a large hook-shaped building block - situated at the southwestern edge of the Extension Plan - and consists of adjoining strips of flats designed by various related architects, including J.H. van den Broek and A. Otten.

Description

The strip-shaped residential block comprises a basement and four storeys under a flat roof. The flats are constructed in dark-glazed brick (basement and ground floor) and white/yellow glazed brick (the upper floors), entirely in running bond. The party walls between the windows on the upper floors are also laid in dark-glazed brick. Windows are originally set in narrow steel profiles with window sills and surrounds of terracotta-coloured glazed stone. The original steel windows are still present in many of the dwellings. The balconies have iron and sheet-steel balustrades. The residential block contains eight (The Hague-style) corridors, each providing access to six dwellings. In two locations the dwellings are staggered slightly in height in relation to the rising street level. The height differences are accentuated in the roofline. On the ground floor there are two-room dwellings with basement. On the first floor there are three-room dwellings and on the upper storeys six-room maisonettes.

House number 14 forms as a whole a gateway to the tennis court located on the inner courtyard. The facade layout is mirrored on either side of each corridor. The (tiled with broad tiles) corridor with terrazzo floors contains a low (concrete stone) front step on which to the left and right are the wooden profiled front doors with narrow tall window and fanlight of the ground floor dwellings. Between these leads a narrower concrete stone stair to the (four) front doors of the upper dwellings located on the first floor. (Front doors conforming to those of the ground floor). On either side of the corridor are broad two-light windows with fanlights and in the corridor wall a rectangular window. At basement level there are three-light strip windows. On the first and second floors there is per dwelling bay in the middle a small semi-circular balcony with sheet-steel balustrade and on either side of this a broad window that at the corner runs onto the small balcony in a narrower window, both with fanlights. On the third floor there is in the middle of the facade, precisely in line above the two underlying balconies, one continuous balcony with rounded corners and a sheet-steel balustrade conforming to that of the semi-circular balconies. In the middle a glass wind screen divides the balcony in two. At the height of the (rounded) ends of the balcony are the balcony doors with on either side of these a broad and a narrower two-light window. These windows have no fanlights and are thus less tall than the windows on the underlying storeys. The facade is finished with a slightly projecting concrete roof edge. The rear facade is constructed in red brick and the windows are here set in wooden frames. On the ground floor there are verandas, on the first floor balconies under a glazed mono-pitched roof and on the second floor large balconies. The third floor is set back at the rear by approximately one third. Here there is a flat with verandas. Balconies and verandas are fitted with slender steel balusters and behind them are (originally) double wooden doors with windows with horizontal glazing bars, flanked by identically designed windows, all with fanlights. Next to this is another door, next to which a rectangular window, with fanlights.

Valuation

Residential block with corridor flats and maisonettes, built in 1932 to a New Functionalist design by W.Th. ten Bosch, of general importance by reason of its architectural history, urban planning and typological value, as well as of importance within the oeuvre of the architect. Also of importance by reason of ensemble value as a characterising component of the Blijdorp Extension Plan and the visual coherence with the residential blocks likewise executed in the New Functionalist manner to designs by other architects.
