Inleiding

In plaats hiervan werden eenvoudige houten entrees in pergolavorm geplaatst.

Introduction

Prominently situated in the district of Spangen, the CLUBHOUSE "het Kasteel", belonging to the football stadium of R.V. and A.V. "Sparta" which was completely renewed in 1999-2000, built in 1916 in Traditionalist style according to designs by the architects J.H. de Roos and W.F. Overeijnder. Het Kasteel is the oldest club stadium in the Netherlands and was built in the Spangensche polder, close to the location where the Castle "Spangen" stood in the thirteenth century. The name and design refer to this castle. By making land available for the construction of the stadium, the municipality aimed to exercise a positive influence on the quality of the (later) development of the district of Spangen.

N.B. The originally planned monumental entrances with brick corner towers on either side of the clubhouse were never realized. Instead, simple wooden entrances in pergola form were placed. These have since been replaced by straight brick side entrances. In 1927, two concrete grandstands were built over the lower side wings of the clubhouse. The front facades of the side wings were raised for this purpose. On the terrace, a large glass/plastic business lodge was placed in 1988. The original caretaker's dwelling on the first floor now forms the entrance to this business lodge. The rectangular clubroom originally had a grey/yellow tiled floor and a wainscoting of decorative tiles from the factory of Joost Thooft and Labouchère. The clubroom has since been renovated and divided into a larger and a smaller room.

Description

The clubhouse, prominently situated in the axis of the Huygensstraat, is built on an elongated rectangular ground plan and comprises two storeys and partially a basement. The facades are built in red brick with coverings, lintels and the like of natural stone. The gabled and tent roofs are tiled. Doors and window frames (sash windows with six-paned glazing bars) are of wood. The building has a symmetrical layout consisting of a three-window-axis wide central section, flanked by two bay sections treated as towers with three sides and two straight side wings (originally one storey high) each with a small corner tower at the end. The facade of the central risalit is provided at the top and between the ground floor and first storey with bands of ornamental brickwork. Centrally in the middle section is the recessed entrance with entrance portal behind a wide stone staircase. The double wooden door with fanlight is located beneath a masonry round arch. In the narrow slanted facade planes of the entrance section are small narrow windows. Above the door the name "SPARTA" is applied in iron lettering. On the first storey above the entrance section a three-sided balcony with (open) masonry balustrade. Upon it are located left and right sculptured apes with a laced football, made by sculptor Willem Brouwer. In the middle a wrought-iron flagpole. In the facade behind the balcony three rectangular windows. On the gabled roof above this building volume a roof dormer with tower spire. On either side of the entrance section the two tower-like bays, each with a six-paned window on each of the three sides, crowned with tall octagonal tent roofs with brick coping. On either side of the 'towers' a bay with on the ground floor a somewhat lower window and on the storey a window in conformity with the other windows and the two smaller octagonal corner towers with tent roofs. Concealed behind the corner towers are found in the side facade on the ground floor stone stairs to the service entrances. The stair towers, provided with narrow windows, are slightly higher and have octagonal tent roofs. Set back from the central block are the 9-window-axis side wings. At the height of the first storey the facades of these side wings are provided with stepped blind niches with narrow stepped ventilation slots centrally within them. The rear facade of the central block contains on the ground floor seven round arches and on either side thereof a narrower door. The middle three round arches contain (originally) double doors, the others windows. In front of this facade is a large terrace with two narrow stairways to the side doors and a wide staircase to the three round-arch shaped entrances. On the first storey there was originally likewise a large terrace with brick balustrade. In 1988 the large superstructure with business lodge was placed here. Above the side wings are on the rear side large public grandstands. The side facades of these grandstands are of brick. Originally large terraces were also located on the flat roofs of the side wings. All terraces were originally accessible via two monumental staircases on either side of the central risalit. These staircases are still present beneath the grandstands.

Internally, the original octagonal board room is still present with decorative profiled wooden wall panelling and the original furnishings. To the right of the vestibule is the (former) octagonal refreshment room (with basement). In line with the vestibule is the large rectangular club hall. In the northern wall of the club hall are the round arches of the rear facade, with a view of the field.

Valuation

Club building "het Kasteel" of the R.V. and A.V. "Sparta", built in 1916 in Traditionalist style after designs by the architects J.H. de Roos and W.F. Overeijnder, of general importance for reasons of cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban-planning value. Also of typological value as part of the first permanent club stadium in the Netherlands and of great situational value due to its position determining the streetscape in the axis of the Huygensstraat. Also of significance within the oeuvre of the Rotterdam architect duo De Roos and Overeijnder.
