Inleiding

Description
Introduction
WATER TOWER, built in 1926-1927 on commission of the Provincial Water Supply Company of North Holland in Art Déco style as part of the drinking water supply of the municipalities of Aalsmeer, Haarlemmermeer, Uithoorn and Bennebroek. Chief engineer during construction was ir. B.F. van Nievelt, ir. H. Sangster acted as designer. The water tower was built by the Hollandsche Maatschappij tot het uitvoeren van werken in gewapend beton in 's-Gravenhage. The water tower is situationally dominant, located on the shore of the Westeinder Plassen. Although this was not the most financially advantageous building site, the client chose this location because it would fully respect the landscape's natural beauty.
Description
The 50 m high, square water tower consists of a construction of four heavy, exposed, reinforced concrete columns at the corners and four lighter columns midway along the facade surfaces, which are connected to each other at regular levels by coupling beams. Narrow light openings are present on either side of the corner columns. Inside the tower shaft, there are also four reinforced concrete columns around the stairwell. The base of the tower is completely encased in concrete, but towards the top the construction becomes progressively lighter and the spaces between the structure are filled with purplish-red brickwork. The concrete construction is incorporated within the architectural design of the tower. Towards the top, the facades, at the level of the high-capacity reservoirs, gain relief through three concrete panels placed one upon another, which widen twice towards the top. The double wooden entrance door with small windows on the east side and the window arrays located at the base of the tower on the other three sides are also surrounded by an expressionist concrete decoration, in the form of a bent parabola. The water tower is crowned by a cap-shaped roof, consisting of eight bent roof planes covered with copper, and has a needle-shaped finial. There is no clear distinction visible on the exterior between the tower shaft and the reservoir section. The tower contains two cylindrical high-capacity reservoirs placed one above the other with flat bottom, constructed of reinforced concrete. The lower reservoir has a diameter of 10.20 m and a capacity of 480 m³. The upper reservoir has a diameter of 10.50 m and a capacity of 520 m³. A spiral staircase between the reservoirs and reservoir casing connects the drip floor with the attic floor. The low-capacity reservoir beneath the tower has a capacity of 160 m³.
Valuation
The well-preserved water tower is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value and because of the quality of the design and its typological value, as well as because of its significance as an element from the history of drinking water supply in the Netherlands. Also of great situational value because of its distinctive silhouette.
